We don't know what basements are, here in this part of the world.  There's a
nice website that describes the typical designs of houses in Queensland.  Its

Our house is similar to the first house on the right-hand side, except for the
fancy (double) front steps and open-style verandas.  This place is about 100
years old.  The open spaces under the house in the photo are enclosed by
corrugated iron on this house, which is what I refer to in my previous mail as
being the 'doghouse'.  The space under the house is effectively exposed to the
elements, etc, nevertheless, to allow for cooling the living spaces above with
the flow of cooler air underneath.

You were on the right track.  :)  (And lucky, too.  There's two towns called
Maryborough.  The other is quite a few thousand kilometres south of here.)  If

The top-left picture (05032012-06h17.png) is a snapshot on our weather bureau's
website last year.  It shows a mini-cyclone rotating over the Maryborough
region, and sucking in additional moisture from cloud formations jetstreaming
down the coastline.  About 30 seconds after I took the snapshot, the
electricity supply died, and didn't come back on till about five hours later. 
There was quite some damage done by the twister, about 30 kilometres south of
here.

The stick of land in the picture between Rainbow Beach & Sandy Cape is called
Fraser Island.  It's the largest 'sand only' island on Earth.  It also shows
quite well on larger scale maps.

That's where most of our population lives.  Most of the continent is borderline
uninhabitable.
