NT class operating systems have always used chkdsk as scandisk was and 
is only for Win9X/ME.  As for the error you received, since you can not 
repair errors on your system\boot partition while Windows is running 
(because the disk can not be locked while in use) you must run chkdsk 
before XP gains control of the system.

You do that by allowing chkdsk to run on the next boot sequence.  Just 
respond "yes" when you are asked after initiating a chkdsk /f from a cmd 
prompt within XP.

If someone's hard drive failed after using defrag or chkdsk it was 
because the drive was defective "NOT" because they defragged it or used 
error checking.  There are no problems with either the XP defrag utility 
or chkdsk.

NTFS like FAT, will fragment over time.  I personally run my defrag 
program once a month and about the same for chkdsk.

Do you have automatic updates turned on?  If not, it might be a good 
idea to do so.  The latest updates include a cumulative security update 
for IE among others.
