Even on desktop PCs, we're getting up there... I do know a number of people
with 1 GB installed, for instance. And on Monday, I met with 'the Adobe guy',
out here doing press demos of Adobe's soon-to-be-on-the-shelf Creative Suite 2.

He stated that Adobe claims 512 MB as the minimum recommended RAM, but he's
suggesting users install 2 GB to get reasonable performance-- especially since
the CS2 is designed to merrily run multiple modules at the same time... an
Adobe Illustrator file might include pieces of a Photoshop file, for instance,
and an Illustrator user might end up inside Photoshop to edit that layer in her
file. Similarly the Adobe page layout program InDesign might end up with an
Illustrator file and multiple Photoshop files embedded in a document, and could
easily end up with all of these RAM-hungry programs open at once.

But my point(s) in the article were:

1) I'm talking desktop users, not servers (Sun, PC, or otherwise)-- there's
arguably a market for 64-bit servers right now

2) Desktop users don't need 64-bit features and don't have a 64-bit version of
Windows yet, or 64-bit desktop applications for the 64 bit-supporting OS's such
as Linux or Mac OS X. And history suggests its silly to buy hardware now for
software that won't be available for a while... you'll be able to buy better
hardware (for less money) later, when the software is actually available.
