Ärende: Encryption ?

Hi Jean:

The DLink drivers on the CD are very likely out of date. Your TP is
using XP Home SP2 which introduced a new wireless wizard, drivers,
setup, and lots more. I had to completely update my wireless Microsoft
Base Station and BUS card when I installed SP2 on the notebook. The
Base Station even required a firmware update. Instead of installing the
DLink drivers, use the built in ones from XP Home SP2.

You can always access your base station from IE anyway and run setup
from there. Just type in the DLink IP address from IE, give your
password, and the DLink setup menu will appear.

JP> You wonder why I do this ? I was toying with encryption !
JP> Or at least trying to do this. In XP Pro, if I go to System ->
JP> Network Adapter -> Properties -> Advanced, I can see in the left

JP> encryption code is so I can then copy this to the other systems

*You* have to enter the code before it will appear. Anyway, you can
skip the encryption and just use MAC filtering instead. That's fairly
effective and it won't slow the system down. You can find the MAC
address of your DLink base station on the bottom of the unit. To find
the MAC address of your IBM network card, type in "ipconfig" from RUN.

JP> Now the funny part. There is always one. On the main
JP> system that I am typing this on, if I follow the same path,

That menu doesn't even appear on my desktop system because it's hooked
directly to my DLink router or MS wireless base station via CAT-5. It
does appear on my notebook when I have the MS wireless BUS card
inserted. And yes, why would you need encryption on a wired network?

Some time ago I picked up a neighbor's wireless broadcast on my unit. I
have no idea which neighbor it was but our homes are not situated close
together as in some track home neighborhoods. I only use wireless
around here when I have to, most of the time I'm on the wired unit or I
just move the notebook close to the DLink router and attach an
additional CAT-5 cable.

Regards.

JP> This does not solve my Dlink 650 problem, I would like to
JP> use encryption as recently I am picking up a Linksys when all my
JP> adapters are Dlink. I connected to that Linksys... hee ! I have
JP> not found where it is yet, I will go hotspot hunting soon but it
JP> is not the left nor right neighbours.

JP> Have a great day.

JP> The VIA 800 needs a new HD.
JP> One is on its way, a 10 g.
