Ärende: True Image foul up
==========================

CS> JE> A few days ago I reported that I had to restore a program using the
CS> JE> "Restore Image" function of True Image. All went well - I restored the
CS> JE> desired program with no problem.
CS> JE> Then the fun began. I could not "unplug" the image no matter what I
did.

CS>I don't understand your use of "unplug" the image? The only time an image
CS>requires unplugging is when you load the image to the system in order to
CS>extract individual files from it. True Image creates virtual drives for
CS>each image of a partition in that situation. Is that what you were doing?
CS>Restoring an image to an individual partition or an entire drive requires
CS>booting the machine with the True Image CD and the running the restore.

I created the image in order to extract a particular file from it - as
you state above.

CS> JE> After fiddling a good bit it finally dawned on me that somehow True
CS> JE> Image named my USB thumb drive as the image even though the original
CS> JE> data was still on the thumb drive! I could not open it via My Computer.
CS> JE> Plugging it in opened it up as Virtual Clone Drive.

CS>That definitely sounds strange. But why was the original data on the
CS>thumb drive or was that where you had first copied it to?

Yes the original data was still on the thumb drive.

CS> JE> I finally managed to delete both the thumb drive (virtual clone drive)
CS> JE> using Device Manager and deleting-removing both the thumb drive and the
CS> JE> Virtual clone drive. I had already saved the data on the USB drive.
CS> JE> Renamed it "USB 1 Gig" and restored the data. Now all is well.

Well, I am sorta lost also. but the above is exactly what I did.

CS>You lost me here.

CS> JE> For the life of me I can't remember whether the USB was plugged in or
CS> JE> not when I made the restore image.

CS>It doesn't matter when creating images since the system will always
CS>assign it a valid drive letter anyway. True Image when booted from the CD
CS>should be able to "see" all USB external devices: HDDs, Thumb Drives. DVD
CS>drives, etc.

CS> JE> Funny thing - I restored the system to a week before I started this
CS> JE> problem and the same misnamed drives were still there, Makes me wonder
CS> JE> just how truly good the True Image restore function actually is.

CS>I'm convinced True Image is steady and does what it's supposed to do.
CS>However, its interface and instructions during the restore process could
CS>be better refined. You remember the problem I had last week accidently
CS>incorrectly restoring a partition as "extended" rather than "primary". Of
CS>course I could have paid closer attention to what I was doing, but the
CS>confusing instructions given by True Image restore didn't help.

CS>Anyway, since we both recovered... all is well that ends well.

Well, not really. Now I cannot see the thumb drive on this system
although I have absolutely no problem using in on a system I just
finished doing a clean install of XP (after making an XP CD with SP2
slipstreamed) for a friend. Used the thumb drive to install some
utilities - Virus checker, firewall, etc.
So, I'm not really out of the woods yet!

Jay
