Same with my son although I believe there are some things a user can
upgrade on the eMac.  Not sure exactly other than memory but I do remember
the salesman at CompUSA saying that they can be upgraded.

I'm surprised to learn you can purchase a screen for a Thinkpad on eBay.
That would be the way to go considering how much a new one would cost.
Macs are not designed to be taken apart and upgraded as we tend
think and do with a PC.  An example of Apple's hardware bite on cost....

I was in the market for an iPOD for my daughter and did some pricing of
them and asking questions at Best Buy.  The salesman told me that it would
be foolish not to purchase an extended service plan for the iPOD.  I asked
him why....  He said that replacing the rechargeable battery alone could
cost around $100.00 including labor and tax!  Service plan to extend the
warranty on the iPOD for an additional two years is $65.00.
