For the past decade, Macs have used pretty standard parts for RAM, hard drive,
optical drive, etc... even their graphics cards are made by ATI or nVidia
(though they need special drivers-- you can't just plug any PC video card into
a Mac and expect it to work).

I'm typing this message on an iMac, running Windows 98 within a Virtual PC
emulation window... for that system, I upgraded the RAM with standard PC RAM
modules that I purchased at my corner PC clone shop. (They had no idea the RAM
was destined for a Mac).

Moreover, because Macs were the first computers to make USB ports (and later
Firewire ports) widely available, the vast range of USB and Firewire gadgets
were available for Macs first, and almost always ship with drivers for Windows
and Mac.
