 The choice of (R)epair install is one on the menu when you boot
 from the CD.  Since the program boots from the CD and loads all
 of its drivers from the CD, it doesn't *know* that it's needed and
 interact with the hard drive until you select it.

 The other caveat is that the CD should itself have been updated
 with at least the most recent service packs (SP2).  You use
 AutoStreamer or the like to accomplish this.

 That way the repair install should not try to undo anything that
 the more recent service pack installations have done to Windows,
 not only reverting it to an earlier state, but perhaps consuming
 considerable time in doing so. ;-)

 After completing the repair install, you can use Windows update
 to see if any lost updates need to be re-installed.

 Lastly, it goes without saying that anyone needing to attempt
 a repair install *should* have a current system backup on hand
 from which to restore.  Indeed, restoring from backup may be
 a more straightforward approach than doing the repair install.

 I personally would be *very* skeptical of the integrity of any
 system that had experienced an aborted repair install, and
 agree that a restore is indicated, but not from Windows.
 You do have a backup available, don't you? :-)
