========================
ML> i beg to differ... mainly because one doesn't /need/ to run the
ML> latest and (supposedly) greatest software... that's a marketing
ML> ploy that all too many fall for...

DC> My apologies if you took me for an end-user. I don't fall for
DC> marketing ploys, and i'm not an end-user who seems to think he
DC> needs the fastest equipment possible.

i didn't take you as an end user... many in here who help others are not "just
end users"... in fact, quite a few have been in the IT industry in some manner
or another for 20+ years ;)

ML> the fastest machine in this household it a 450mhz AMD and it is
ML> the _least_ used machine of the dozen or so here... the
ML> bbs/internet server is running a PII-266 and the linux server is
ML> running on a P-200... this box is the most used and it is a
ML> Celeron-300A...

DC> That's good. However, linux doesn't need much of a machine to sit
 DC> and serve files.

i said "server" not "just serves files" ;) that machine is also the database
server for the internet server... if i sit and count everything that machine
does, it performs roughly 10 major jobs that are necessary for my network to
operate as well as provide the backroom services that my internet server
requires...

DC> I don't know of any childrens software currently
DC> being produced for linux, tho. BBSses were happy on 286s; I ran
DC> one. <g> If you don't mind slowspeeds, thats perfectly fine with
DC> me. If your going to tell me you don't notice much of a difference
DC> between a p4 or an amd semperon vses your fastest box; I'd wonder
DC> what drugs you were on.

since i haven't had the "pleasure" of running a P4 or an AMD semperon, i cannot
comment on that aspect... my only reason for commenting was to point out that
one doesn't need the latest and greatest to get the jobs done that need to be
done... heck, i've got a 486DX-133 running as an internet router for one group
of machines and it hardly rises above 10% total usage ;)

ML> the main point of this message is like that of TW quoted above...
ML> not every needs the latest, greatest and fastest... in fact, most
ML> users don't use more than 20% (being lienient here) of the
ML> capabilities of their machines...

DC> No they don't. But, I don't think it's a good idea to assume the
DC> user isn't ever going to do more then write email. Said user as
DC> another posted already commented, might wish to explore digital
DC> photography, digital movies, digital music, etc etc. They will
DC> soon find the advice "Oh, just get this old computer; you don't
DC> need a new one for what your doing." wasn't such good advice after
 DC> all.

to start off with, that advice was perfectly ok... at least that person
wouldn't feel so bad when they toss that old box away and upgrade to something
better when they actually have the need to rather than realizing that they
spent $1000 more than they needed to a few years earlier than they need to...
even the old boxes can do a lot of digital stuff... it just takes more time for
the processing... if the user truely wishes to advance further than the
capabilities of their current machine, then they will be more than happy to
spend the money to move up... much happier than if they realize that they spent
$2000+ far too early and it was wasted on simply writting email and browsing
the web for two or more years...

DC> Incidently, I'm a technician for a small repair store here where I
DC> live; I see many of these old computers pawned off on people who
DC> originally didn't think they would even like one. They are not
DC> happy to find out the computer won't do this or that with it's
DC> current hardware. They assumed just because it's a few years old
DC> (5+ usually) that it would do these things, should they wish; just
 DC> slowly.

that "pawning off" is another marketing thing, believe it or not ;) think about
it... you can't go 200mph in a $200 pinto or vega O:)
