It's supposed to be automatic unless you've told the security center to 
not use the XP firewall.  Mine activated automatically when I removed 
ZA.  And it stayed activated until I installed Sygate.

Open Device Manager and make sure the Xircom is being detected properly 
and the drivers are installed.  Also make sure your "Wireless Zero 
Configuration" service is set to automatic and is running.  Sounds like 
the Xircom bus card may not be working?  Make sure you set the 
properties to allow Windows to handle the connection automatically.

Sounds like the kind of day where it may be better to stay close to 
home.  Just repaired my wife's hair dryer the other day.  She has one of 
those automatic types from Germany with multiple settings.  The internal 
switch connection came loose from the main cable.  Easy to repair.
