Each religion has a whole constellation of cultural norms that surround it 
in addition to its faith tenets.  More often than not conflict with a 
religion is a conflict with its cultural entorage.

It also aids trust and intimacy among the unwashed masses.

You can't let states choose what docuemntation from other states they will 
accept.

States refusing to recognize marriages from other states is the tip of a 
huge iceberg.  If states decide not to recognize a marriage from another 
state, what other state institutions or certificates can suddenly be 
challenged or discarded?  Contracts, incorporation documents, lots of stuff 
is suddenly up for grabs.  Much chaos could result.

I believe that true polygamy to be fiendishly difficult to maintain over the 
long haul.  It appears to me that the effort needed to maintain proper 
mutual intimacy in any multilateral relationship increases by the square of 
the total number of people involved.
