I'm surprised you can even get them -- actual USPS employees -- to use it.
They're so particular/cranky about such things. A few years ago, I got tired
of the mailman rolling up the mail in order to fit in our small, wall-mounted
mailbox next to the front door. We nearly _always_ get some oversized mail,
whether it's magazines, or photographs from my clients (that they need me to
scan and post on their websites), catalogs, or something else. So I looked
around and found a _large_ wall-mounted mailbox, one you could fit
Manhattan's yellow pages in easily, and replaced the small one with it. They
STILL roll up the mail, no matter how little or how much there is. I think
it's just the way they do it because most houses have small boxes -- so as
they're walking, they pull out the mail for the next house, and roll it up.
But I get really annoyed when my New Yorker is a tube, or something more
precious (like a photo!) is irreparably curled.

Oh, and rolling things up means that the clump of mail sometimes gets stuck
towards the top of the box, so the lovely, secure, rainproof closure is
partially propped open by the roll of mail (which, if inserted flat, would
certainly be able to have the lid closed above it). Which completely sucks
on a rainy day.

I've never said anything because 1) our regular guy has now retired, and we
don't seem to have any permanent person assigned yet; 2) I'm afraid
complaints would only make them do worse things to our mail!

Luckily Cafe Press packs these things really well, so when it's sitting
behind the bushes underneath my mailbox (why? I don't know), at least I know
it's protected inside that cardboard sheath.
