Hey, entire newsgroup,

How about we all try to get back to the basics and remember a few rules of 
good netiquette while posting here?

The worst offenses here are generally top posting (which is BAD, people, I am 
SERIOUS you guys!), and lack of adequate snippage of backquotes (which leads 
to moderator weeping, and posts of nearly 1000 lines).  We sometimes also get 
replies with no context at all, which is the reverse of that problem.

If anyone needs a pointer to information about good netiquette -- or about 
_why_ some of these practices are in place (I realize some people are 
virulently opposed to stopping their practice of top posting), please just 
ask.  There are people here who have been on Usenet since before the monolith 
came down to teach the apes, and I'm sure they all have strong opinions on 
this topic that they would just love to share.

On these three subjects though, it's fairly easy and sensible:

1) Don't top post.  People have to scroll down and read the old stuff anyway 
to get the context, and you screw up continuity in the thread since everybody 
else (mostly) is bottom posting.

2) Only use as much backquoting as is required for immediate context.  If 
you're having a long conversation on war or economics (you know who I'm 
looking at!), those of you involved in the conversation undoubtedly remember 
the larger context, and anyone reading along who needs _more_ than immediate 
context can go back in the thread and read more, if they are so inclined.

3) Don't post comments in a vacuum, because everybody reads the newsgroup 
differently.  People who read chronologically rather than threaded may arrive 
at the newsgroup to find your post that says only, "Yeah, but ask the fish 
about that Swiffer mop!"  They'll either have to poke around in messages from 
several days earlier to find your context, or more likely, they'll just 
ignore your post.  And if you do that all the time, they'll ignore _all_ of 
your posts, and you'll start to wonder why nobody is replying to you.
