People keep bringing up the DaVinci Code in connection with this miniseries 
(including me), but I think I have to put my foot down.

It's _not_ really the same.  "Path to 9/11" was a program that looked, 
sounded, and quacked like a historical treatment of a recent event in our 
country's history, and for which there are mountains of verifiable data.

DaVinci Code is a fictional book about a time period for which we have little 
to no verifiable data.

The points raised by DaVinci Code were so objectionable to so many Christians 
_not_ because they couldn't tell the difference between fiction and fact; 
it's more like the reaction of the fundamentalist Islamic world to the Danish 
cartoons from a few months ago.  It was a visceral reaction to something they 
felt was inviolable.  Sort of like being in a confrontation with a schoolyard 
bully and taunting, "So's yer mother!"  You _know_ that a comment like that 
is going to guarantee a melee.

This is _exactly_ the Christian reaction to DaVinci Code.  "You say something 
about my mother??" and bam, a big brawl ensues.

While "Path to 9/11" was much more - exactly, in fact - like the kind of 
propaganda we've seen time and time again from fascistic, despotic 
governments.  I actually think that lumping Pto911 and DVC is doing a 
disservice -- in that context, it's too easy to laugh off the reaction of 
people who "can't tell fact from fiction," who were too dumb (or getting a 
soda) to read the disclaimer, etc. etc.  People - like Wendy's observed 
watercooler crowd at the bank - aren't trained to spot and defend themselves 
against propaganda, which is a very subtle and insidious tool.  The people 
who came away from this program with the idea that they now know some things 
about what led up to 9/11 that they didn't know before - and which in fact 
are completely fabricated - should be forgiven, and even pitied.  And 
hopefully properly educated at some point when we're free to tell the truth.
