I dunno how Torchwood compares to Deadwood, but the latter is pretty, well, 
harsh, and runs completely uncut on the History Channel in Canada (whose CRTC 
has rules very similar to those of the FCC), which is a non-PPV "premium"
channel.

Okay, it's safe now...

I can't help but wonder sometimes, where network brains are when they bleep and

edit things (insert punchline here)... at times there seems to be no rhyme or 
reason.  Our local cityTV affiliate here (and actually, I think it's pretty
much 
the same for cityTV stations across Canada) runs movies largely uncut most 
weekday late-evenings (9pm on), and they will often bleep one thing but not 
another that's almost identical - for example, in one movie, they allowed 
several 'fucks' through, but then bleeped a 'motherf***er'.  Other times, they 
seem to bleep more heavily during the first half-hour-to-an-hour, then just let

everything through... other times, they don't, or will apply the same minimal 
level of bleeping throughout the movie.

The really amazing part is seeing movies 100% uncut, late night... ON THE CBC
of 
all places!

Now I don't wanna get off on a rant here, but...

Actually, the ones that get me the most are the cuts made to music.  I've heard

more songs that try to make deep, meaningful statements, lose all their impact 
because of excessive bleeping and blanking, while others get by with completely

unnecessary swearing for no obvious reason (and let me clarify: I don't have a 
problem with the swearing, it just wouldn't change the meaning or impact of the

song at all to NOT have it there).

Examples: I've heard at least four different versions of Everlast's "What It's 
Like", with different levels of censoring.  The song is basically a
street-level 
statement of "Never judge a man until you walk a mile in his shoes", complete 
with street-level language (Everlast, btw, used to be with hip-hop pioneers 
House Of Pain, to give you an idea).  Yet in some versions, so much is cut out,

it not only loses its impact, it almost fails to make sense.

In the LEAST "sanitized" version, the only thing bleeped is the one and only 
fuckin' in the first verse - all the other shits and god-damns and everything 
else is left alone.  Another version takes out all of the outright "swear" 
words, but leaves in various epithets ('whore' and such).

The worst just removes all meaning.  The word 'drugs' is bleeped in a verse 
talking about a kid who gets into the gangsta life and gets killed for it, and 
the pain his family goes through because of it.  Even 'chrome .45' is bleeped 
from this verse.

Likewise, the Papa Roach song, "Last Resort", is essentially a plea for help 
from the perspective of a kid who's going through all kinds of hell and wanting

to kill himself, the obvious idea being to attempt to say to such kids, you're 
NOT alone in those feelings, and suicide ISN'T the answer.  Yet any reference
to 
any kind of self-inflicted harm is blanked out, completely negating the impact 
and emotion and MEANING of the song.

Meanwhile, we get the last bastion of Canadiana in song, The Tragically Hip,
who 
in their song "Fireworks" have the line, 'you said you didn't give a fuck about

hockey'... okay, that could be just about anything, and it really doesn't
change 
the song at all, yet there is only the one version out there, completely
uncensored.
