Surely you mean "DVDs" - the origial non-anamorphic disc and the

Well, my catalog badly needs an update and since my books are all
stacked up along the walls waiting to be reshelved after the new rugs
are down and the bookcases back where they belong, I should do those,
too.

Fortunately I've happened upon a couple of labor-saving devices.

Readerware

Readerware is a software suite for cataloging books, CDs, LPs,
laserdiscs, VHS tapes  and DVDs.  It consists of three modules that
will download cover art, author and publsher information, track lists
and cast and crew credits based on the barcode on every dust jakcet and
disc cover.  It works on multiple platforms and costs all of $40 USD.
I may stick with the free version of DVD Profiler for my DVD
collection, since I've been using that for years and half my stuff is
already in its database (with a back-up copy on-line.)

But Readerware looks like a good tool for my books and (far fewer) CDs.
 And I may switch to their DVD cataloging system after I've had a
chance to play around with it.

So, I hear you asking...  What good does a quick and easy cataloging
system the uses barcodes do me if I don't have a barcode scanner?
Well, if you've got $30, you should *get* one:

Note:  The free CueCat scanner mentioned on the Readerware site is no
longer available.  CueCat offered through Radio Shack that you got in
exchange for an agreement that you would periodically go to a website
and scan the barcodes from products you bought as part of a marketing
deal, as well as scanning codes that would pop up on your screen to
earn points, etc.  The whole operation folded some time ago, although
some people still sell the old scanners on eBay.

With these news tools, I look forward to having my entire collections
cataloged by the end of March.  Middle of April at the latest.  No,
seriously, by May I'll have every book, LP, CD, DVD, LD, magazine and
pamphlet I own in a neat little database.  June, tops...
