That is what I've been saying ... for many years I have been saying it has been
going back MANY years even in my brief (thank goodness) DOS hacking daze which
was MANY years ago as well.

Zmodem never really went anywhere on any Unix system I ever saw. It was
extremely flakey at best. Not entirely sure why that was but it never really
made a difference so I personally never lost any sleep over it.
PK> My end is OS/2 and a Rexx FTP Script I wrote that I still use

That interests me for some strange reason. Not sure why exactly but I suppose
it might be that I almost switched from DOS to OS/2 simply because of what I
had heard about rexx many, many years ago (95-ish). However a math prof friend
of mine - who now lives and works in your part of the world btw - talked me
into linux, slackware more specifically, and OS/2 never got a fair shake mostly
due to bios problems and it's native bootloader not being able to handle it
whereas lilo had no issues once the kernel got loaded. The rest is history,
although I have looked at others since then, such as FreeBSD and other linux
based distributions. Lately I've been venturing off more or less on my own but
it was slackware that got me to this point.

Which ftpd? I've encountered at least one OS/2 based ftpd server that had some
basic issues. Once the bugs were known I came up with a few fixes from the
client's perspective but I knew then OS/2 would have been the wrong choice to
make wrt what I wanted out of my computers. Obviously my math prof friend was
bang on as to knowing what I wanted before I even knew.
PK> 1997 - today, to Bob Seaborn.
Yeah. His irex thingy has a few anomalies but overall isn't too bad
considering the DOS-think world he is trapped in. Heh, heh. Silly OS/2 people
eh? I almost feel sorry for them. ;-)

PK> whatever a "UNIX Type: L8" Server is......;-)
I never knew he was running an ftp server. Probably older redhat (prior to
fedora). That would be my guess. If true then he is probably stuck with their
buggy ftpd (I forget what it is called now).
PK> My Rexx FTP script uses the Rexx FTP API and is HEAVILY customised

Sounds excellent.
PK> For Filecho's, FTP and my script is good enough but even then I find

Me too. Picking away at it from time to time.
PK> Thats why I moved to
PK> BinkD/2 for Echomail, it is significantly more reliable and better

We might have to see about that. I can't duplicate the rexx part but I bet a
bash script could solve that issue and run circles around your binkd/2. <BEG>
PK> Plus I can do things (such as better error recovery) with Rexx FTP
PK> that a standard FTP client can't do.
Right. I've seen many poor clients over the years.
PK> PROVIDED you use an "intelligent" Client, but I still don't consider
PK> it good enough for Echomail.
Bah! You've never seen my linux boxes in action then. Even the 486 thinks
it's a Cray compared to much beefier systems pretending to be servers on the
god forsaken internet these days. Shhhhhh.

Yes but that is OS/2. I'll set something up between a Dell server I happen to
have at the moment (customizing it for a friend) and my box in the next little
while and see if I can replicate the above at least bytewise and I'll post my
results. I cannot run binkd/2 but will do my best to optimize a linux based
binkd and will compare it to a bash scripted vsftpd. Care to make a wager on
which wins?
Life is good,
