====================

ml> think EMX and all will be revealed (for the most part) ;)

 MK> Could be.

no, not could be... emx is gcc...

my "for the most part" comment is directed at other tools that many assume are
part of gcc but aren't and need to be located and gathered seprately ;)

ml> you're only talking about changing one word in two lines, IIRC... no
 ml> big deal...

MK> But that doesn't get rid of the bloat.

and you won't... it isn't all that much, anyway...

 MK> I don't have that bloat although I could if I bothered. I
MK> didn't. What I asked was if all the bloat of the GUI could be
 MK> dispatched with althogether.

there may be a way but i don't know for sure... it isn't DOS, *nix, or windows
and one mustn't come at it or look at it like it is one of those...

MK> According to the main site it isn't an option and commanline is
 MK> temporary via CMD.EXE. XFree86/2 btw.

uhhh... one has been able to run X on OS/2 for years and years... heck, i did
it on Warp 3 Connect way back when... no big deal [shrug]... and the command
line doesn't have to be temporary if you leave the task open... it is as simple
as that... again, no big deal... you're making mountains out of molehills...

MK> Other than X (Unixie) and Rexx (OS/2), it sounds very much like
 MK> win98 to me

buzzzzzzzt... backup... win9x is derived from OS/2... remember the brauhaha
between IBM and microsoft when they split company over OS/2? win95 is what they
came up with... winNT is/was closer to OS/2 than any other windows version but
they had to go and screw all that up, too... anyway... so what...

MK> except with a few additional ports from gnu or at least opensource
MK> that could just be ported to win32 (ie win98).

[shrug] ???

MK> Nothing really special that I see there.

again, so? there's nothing really special in any OS... so what's the big deal?

MK> I have way more working in less then 200M

so? 500Gig drives are pennies a megabyte, these days... 200Meg is hardly
anything to worry about... heck, my Warp 3 Connect box is using right about
200Meg, too, and i "have more working" as well and _with_ a gui in that space
;) so what? is it really all that big a deal??

MK> whereas they seem to have devoted far too much to getting their
MK> GUI to work and are far behind everyone else in that regard,
MK> nevermind development tools such as gcc and friends.

there's plenty of development stuff out there... you just have to know where to
look to find it... that's no different than the *nix stuff, really... all of
the minimalist *nix systems i know of don't have kernel sources or any compiler
of any kind much less gcc... so i still fail to see what the big deal is about
them...

MK> Also I don't see any mention of kernel source. What's the deal
 MK> with that?!?!?!?! <BEG>

why do you have to have the kernel sources? i sure don't and no ones has dies
because they didn't... who really cares about them? they aren't required for
the system to operate... in fact, they are simply more bloat that you keep
speaking of trying to eliminate ;)
