Washington tastes

Cresta Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2001 - not a bad wine
at all, with rich black cherry notes and good spice, a
hint of anise. Uncle SY called it a "very good wine." I'd
give it a B-. Went exceptionally well with my brother's
fennel-dusted salmon (medium rare) and pretty well with my
veal chop (ordered medium rare and received blood rare).
SY had a salad; I don't know how the wine went with that.

New Braunfels Smokehouse Jalapeno sausage (pork and beef) -
a bit too fatty even for me; quite salty. Flavor pleasant,
just a little spicy - distinct pepper bits and seeds in
the grind. I wonder about a Texas hot link that has pork
in it, though.

New Braunfels Smokehouse bratwurst - flavor of pepper and
pork, despite the main meat in this being beef I think.
Kind of okay, but too salty.

New Braunfels Smokehouse cheddarwurst - not so fatty, not
so salty. Nobody told me what it was when I bit into it,
so I was unprepared for the taste of slightly rancid milk
that greeted me. I didn't eat any more of this.

New Braunfels Smokehouse apple sausage - not unpleasant,
the apple and a touch of sweet spice making it rather like
a Chinese sausage; it was also a bit drier than the others,
so I actually could have used more fat. I wonder, though,
about a Texas link that has apples in it.

Quaker maple and brown sugar multigrain cakes - a big one
has only 50 Calories, which is nice. The flavor, which my
brother likens to Cheerios, is less so. It's not horrid
but not something I'd care to snack on. My brother also
points out that the aftertaste persists for an unconscionable
long time.

Godiva Platinum Collection - these look and taste like Choxies,
only more stale. I don't like Choxies much, either.

Liberty Orchards Signature Nut Quartet Gift Tin - macadamias,
pistachios (in shell), cashews, mixed nuts (incl. cashews,
almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, macadamias, peanuts, Brazil nuts,
partially hydrogenated soybean oil, salt) - the macadamias were
about as stale a bunch of nuts as I've ever encountered outside
the Massachusetts state legislature. The pistachios were about
as good as the ones that have sat a couple months on the shelf
at the supermarket. The cashews were quite fresh and good. The
mixed nuts were peculiar, as the almonds and pecans were pretty
fresh, but the cashews were stale. I didn't try the hazelnuts
or the single lone Brazil. No evidence of either macadamias or
peanuts. 

Edna Valley Chardonnay 05 - very oaky, mellow, rather too fat,
good acid kick redeemed it though; flavor of stone fruit and
lemon; fairly long, spicy, peachy finish.
