  I also recall that there was a pretty decent cigar trade in Tampa
  Florida, probably by expatriate Cubans.   I guess that was not enough
  to take up the slack from the loss of Cuban trade.


MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Brunswick Stew
 Categories: Stew, Main dish, Chicken, Beef, Ground beef
      Yield: 1 servings
 
      3 lb Broiler-fryer, smoked and
           -skinned
      4    Bay leaves
      6    Celery tops with leaves
  4 1/2 qt Water
  1 1/2 ts Salt
      1 ts Hot sauce
      3    Mdm onions, chopped
     16 oz Pkg frozen whole kernel
           -corn
     16 oz Pkg frozen lima beans
     16 oz Pkg frozen English peas
     28 oz Can crushed tomatoes,
           -undrained
      1 lb Ground beef
      1 lb Smoked pork, chopped
    1/2 c  Worcestershire sauce
      2 ts Garlic salt
      2 ts Allspice
      1    2 tsp black pepper
    1/2    - 1 tsp red pepper
 
  Combine chicken, bay leaves, celery, water, salt, and hot sauce
  in a lg Dutch oven or stock pot, bring to a boil.  Cook,
  uncovered, 15 minutes.  Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, 1
  hour.  Remove chicken from broth, reserving broth in Dutch oven;
  discard bay leaves and celery tops.  Cool chicken; bone and
  coarsely chop meat.  Set aside.
  
  Add onion, corn, limas, peas, and tomaotes to broth; bring to a
  boil.  Cook 15 minutes.  Reduce heat and simmer 1 hour, stirring
  often.
  
  Cook ground beef in a skillet over mdm heat until browned,
  stirring to crumble.  Drain well.  Add ground beef, chicken,
  pork, Worcestershir, garlic salt, allspice and peppers to stew.
  Simmer, uncovered, 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

  beef, and smoked pork in it while the Virginia version has
  chicken only.
