=======================
Howdy Ruth!
->
-> -> west of Deming because of tornadoes west of Las Cruces; we'd
planned to
-> -> get off a couple miles further up the road but no problem since we knew
-> -> the area well enough to get to the road we wanted.
->
-> hn> We certainly enjoyed the small roads and side trips that we took while
-> hn> in New Mex. Lots of wonderful scenery to enjoy! We made this trip
-> hn> "Albuquerque and North" which basically meant Albuquerque and
Santa Fe
-> hn> and some side day trips in between to some Pueblo's and
the "outback".
->
-> IOW, a part of NM we've not covered. We know the I-10 portion too well
-> from trips to Fort Bliss while at Huachuca. For trips north we'd do the
-> Deming cut off to I-25 to I-40, except this last time when we threw in
-> one more side road unexpectedly. Steve has a great aunt in Amarillo we
-> wanted to see on our way out to GA.
->
I sort of wanted to get down south but time was a factor and we had so
much on the list of what we wanted to do that it became clear that one trip
would never make it all happen...so we decided this trip would be north next
trip would be south (grin). Primary reason North won was that's where the
Georgia O'Keefe museum is and I was NOT going to miss that!
->
-> -> hn> exercise in ..and the altitude had a big effect on us as well...we
-> -> hn> were told we're getting 30% less oxygen at this altitude than at
->
-> -> That'll do you, especially if you're not used to it.
->
-> hn> It certainly did! We slept the sleep of the exhausted each night!
->
-> Steve had to do a PT test shortly after arriving at Fort Huachuca from
-> Fort Devens, Mass. It was not one of his better runs. (G)
->
we were pretty careful to try and stay within our limits and for the most part
we did a pretty good job....had no chest pains or need for nitro during the
entire trip, even though we did do a couple of fairly strenuous hikes (at least
for us at that altitude!).
-> -> hn> Tacoma and (probably) I'll head west as well. Was originally
planning
-> -> hn> on driving north through Denver, but the weather does NOT look
-> -> hn> propitious in that direction so I'll head west through AZ
again...may
->
-> -> No probelm there, AZ has a lot to make cutting thru it worthwhile. If
-> -> you used I-10 (presuming you're beyond that now), I hope you stopped
at
-> -> Stout's Cider Mill east of Willcox. Then stop at Texas Canyon (rest
-> -> area) about 25 miles west for some great photo ops!
->
-> hn> I took I-40 as it's a straight shot west from Albuquerque, and unless
-> hn> I plan to make stops for photo's I usually DRIVE when I drive (grin).
-> hn> I went from Albuquerque to Kingman AZ on the first day and didn't
->
->
-> That's a lot of driving! I knw it's a straight shot but I'd be getting
-> saddle sores.
->
My minivan has the most comfortable drivers seat I have ever experienced! I
don't feel tired even after a full day (12-14 hours) of driving. It's more
comfortable than my couch at home!
-> hn> afternoon. Decided not to go north through Vegas and went from
Kingman
-> hn> AZ to Redding CA with only two stops for gas and bathroom...then
-> hn> yesterday (Monday) went from Redding to Tacoma (647 miles) with
one
-> hn> stop to fill the tank in Medford OR....left Redding about 8 am got to
-> hn> Tacoma at 4:01pm...I made good time (grin). When Anne is aboard
we
-> hn> make a LOT more stops, and when I am just out cruising for photo
-> hn> places I may not do more than 100-200 miles a day....but like I said I
-> hn> have a tendency to get from one place to the other with few stops
->
-> Easy for you to do. Just thought I'd suggest a couple of our favorite
-> places along I-10. Of course you know our attraction in Vegas. (G)
->
I like I-10 but it's waaaay too far south and would have added another full
day of driving to the trip. You could just rename Vegas to Grandbabyville
(grin)!
-> hn> In retrospect I would have preferred to go through Vegas if only to
-> hn> put down a bet on the Mariners to win the world Series....Wonder
what
-> hn> the odds are? (grin) But I didn't think of that unitl I was already in
-> hn> California headed north.
->
-> 20/20 hindsight. How are the Mariners expected to do this year? If
-> they make the series and are against the Mets, we'll have to make sure
-> not to get too "into it" against each other here. (G)
->
The improvements they made in the off season seem to be panning out, if the
pitching can hold up to the level and they can generate enough offense they
may have a good chance. We play in a tough division though with the
Oakland A's and the Angels always tough to beat. Hernandez almost pitched
a no hitter against Boston last night (after getting shelled 14-3 the day
before) and still managed to get a complete game and a one hit shutout...not
too shabby in Beantown! However it's very early in the season and I'm not
going to build up any false hopes till at least July (grin)!
->
-> hn> Had a wonderful drive across the Mojave with the Ocotillo in bloom!
->
-> Pretty! Did you get any pictures? We went thru the desert in late
-> August but didn't stop as it was too hot. Rental car had a temperature
-> sensor for the outside; it read something like 115 at one point.
->
Nope didn't do anything more than admire the view from the front seat and
80 miles an hour (grin). I did however really enjoy the view! Anne's car has an
external temp sensor and last year when we went down to visit Amanda we
hit high temps on the way back....117 in the central valley!
-> -> Brunswick. The place was small but serving sizes were huge! I took
-> -> about 2/3 of my small plate of flounder, scallops and shrimp home.
->
-> hn> We at quite well on vacation...now it's back to the diet !
->
-> I saw my primary care doctor Monday for a routine check, meds renewal.
-> Found I've lost a couple of pounds without trying; if I try a bit, I'll
-> drop a few more.
->
Good Job! I took a look at the scales when I got home and I put on a few but
not as many as I expected so I feel pretty good about continuing on with the
program.
-> -> hn> as you and grind our own wheat to make good whole wheat (and
-> hn> other
-> -> hn> grains) bread on our own.
-> hn> ->
-> -> We got the original bread machine after I found I couldn't knead bread
-> -> very well after breaking my wrists. Wore that out in about 6 years and
-> -> replaced it; now this one is showing signs that it'll need replacing in
-> -> the not so distant future. We like home made whole wheat bread
better
-> -> than (most) store breads so our machine gets used on a regular basis.
->
-> hn> Hopefully ours will get some use eventually (grin)
->
-> Once you start with the home made bread, you won't go back. I know you
-> do the Atkins diet thing tho & can't have the carbs with that--too bad
-> as some carbs are better for you than that much protein, especially if a
-> lot of fat and sodium are involved.
->
We're doing the South beach approach which permits some level of "good
carbs" which means fruits and veggies and whole grains....so we can make
our own whole grain bread but still limit how much of it we eat...happily my
sodium numbers are real good, blood pressure is great and we tend towards
the low sodium and low fat anyway. We lost more pounds and did it faster on
the atkins program....but we find that the slower and more complete diet in
the South Beach diet (and the south beach heart program) suits us a little
better over all.
chat with you soon
