Sure is fun!  But Charlotte really does have a much larger reading habit than
her age group by far.  The teacher is only now becoming truely aware of the
level of difference.  He came over at lunch (we live across the street from
the school) to check out her 'home library'.

Now I'm not saying Charlotte has read all of it and some of it isnt 'age
appropriate' so I have it on a separate shelf and told Charlotte if she wants
to read any of those, to talk to me first.  (Not xxx rated but a bit much for
a 13 year old.  Explicit romances mostly, of which I have a few).

She really likes Sherlock Holmes books and the Chelsea Quinn Yarbro 'Saint
Germain' series.  Her favorite book in 3rd grade was 'Little Women'
(Unabridged classic).  She's read most of the Valdemar series (they may have
adult ideas, but are not explict so arent on that 'other shelf').  She likes
'Paradise Lost' but 'Xenophon' she skims for the good parts.  She thinks Jeff
Smith's 'Ancient Cuisines' is cool for the stories.  I put 'Deerskin' on that
'special shelf' because it deals with child rape and incest but told her if
she taks to me first, she can read it but she might have nightmares.

Anyways, the teacher sent me an email 'I had no idea this was going on, she's
so quiet in school I thought she was hiding a reading problem, then I saw that
last paper'.  What she needs, is a better grounding in *writing*, not reading.
If we had 'summer school' here, she'd be a classic pick for a class geared
towards gramatical writing skills.  

He's going to like this next paper too.  It may not be a genuine 'A' because
she's still trying to learn better grammar skills in written expression, but
the scholarship behind it is a definate 'A+' for her grade level and well
above anything else the other kids can produce in a week.  Mostly, her problem
is she has trouble summarizing and it does no good if I do it for her.

Meantime while doing all this (extra credit), she's got to do the normal stuff
her class is assigned.  She's doing better there now.  I told her to put the
collected works of Shakespere down and read the assigned books for now.  I let
her read whatever she wants, but only after the assigned books are done for
that night (or chapters actualy out of an assigned book).  Unfortunately, best
we can hope for this year is if she makes an A this quarter, it will even out
to a D.  I was at sea too much.
