*** Quoting Ruth Haffly from a message to Carol Shenkenberger ***

CS> They make them only for tourists. (Thimbals).

RH> OK, I see. I'd be a tourist buying a thimble. (G) I've one in my
RH> collection that's a regular metal sewing thimble from my (maternal)
RH> ancestral home town in Germany, another, utilitarian thimble made from
RH> fabric from Korea. The rest are all made for collectors, in various
RH> materials and quality.

Hehe thats ok. They like tourists out here. It's either really 'cheap' stuff
out here for thimbals, or *quite* pricey stuff I never looked at that close
exept to notice it would never be usable. 'Thumb art' sort of thing. With
wings and stuff that makes it non-usable.

CS> Not really. They wont let you sign up with that as a plan. There are
CS> only 57 seats total for it. Out of 700 or so kids. Most seats will
CS> fill with those who can walk to it but we live on the other side, 40
 CS> miles away.

RH> Is there time before you go back overseas, that with intensive help fo
RH> you and the school, she can finish the rest of the year successfully?
RH> we were closer, I'd offer to tutor her but............

I'm hopeful she will be ok. I suspect she has to 'repeat' english and possibly
1 other subject but when we get stateside, I hope they dont hold her back a
grade over this. 'No kid left behind' might be in our favor.

Don's dyslexia makes him very hard to help with this one. His school system
just passed him on but he's at last (age 56) working well with written items.
Once he got over worrying that I'd mind his bad spelling in email, he started
working on such. Once or twice I've had to ask him to 'try again as i dont
understand xxxxx' but I can read his phonetics pretty well. His actual level
of dyslexia is far less than mine but well, school system just didnt even try
to work with him around it.

Like many dyslexics, he reads far better than he can write but in his case,
he's a delayed reader because the school system of the 50's-60's didnt believe
in teaching kids like him. He's rabid at Charlotte over her english grades
but really can't help except in one way. He's telling her he's an example of
what happens if she doesnt work harder, then making her help him type emails
to me.

I think she's getting that point too. The problem is the dichotomy. She loves
Dad and his expression isnt up to mine so 'thats ok' but he's telling her,
'no, it isnt as you can be like Mommy'. Such a conundrum... (and ;-) I still
cant spell!)

CS> On SANs, you would probably be bored. Truth is this would be a dream
CS> vacation for me and Steve, if given the option, would love it I am
CS> sure. Major GEEK stuff all 24/7 going on. Very little else going on.

RH> He would; I'd bring a portable sewing machine and stay in the h/motel
RH> room working on a project or two.

CS> Naw, you'd wander too and find a rare stray there like you at the

RH> I'd wander a bit, until I saw all I wanted. Maybe, if I found another
RH> spousal unit, we would do someting together, but the sewing would be
RH> there as a back up.

It would be smart if you and he ever went, to have a backup. That way Steve
wouldnt have to worry that you'd get bored and he could really enjoy the whole
thing.

CS> books back. Couldnt tell you who she was but the book was on BIND
CS> vulerabilites and was slipping out of the stack. Kinda tells you
CS> where our heads are at?

RH> Yes, in geek heaven. (G) Steve doesn't have much more time to do one
RH> these thru the military and has other plans post military so I doubt
RH> he'd ever get to one. He did win a monitor at a convention in Las Veg
RH> some years ago (while we were in AZ) when a friend entered his name in
RH> drawing. (G)

Well, I didnt get to go often to these. When I did, I took full advantage and
left the family at home, mean as that sounds. Charlotte was age 2-4 back then
so I didnt try.

RH> I Know (!) Steve would have his head in a book 23/6.5 (one hour off fo
RH> sleep and one morning off for church.

Snicker, at SANs, he might forget church for once if you keep quiet about it..

CS> Don's got a mouth infection and if the antibiotics dont fix it, we
CS> mayu be gone really fast to a relatively local area (Okinawa or
CS> Yokosuka) to get it worked on. Bad teeth is all it is.

RH> Still, anything in the mouth hurts. Dad came thru surgery OK; he had
RH> have gall bladder surgery in 2 stages. They thought they could do it
RH> all laproscopically but couldn't do the 2nd one that way so he got the
RH> big cut. It means he'll be in the hospital longer and a longer recove
RH> time.

CS> Ouch. Well, Don's on meds. We have to see how that goes.

RH> Hopefully he's improving by the time I see this. Antibiotics? The one
RH> I had for my last round of bronchitis in Feb. really knocked it down
RH> fast but had to go to a civilian pharmacy for them. Had to pay the mo
RH> expensive co-pay as they were a newer, non generic, not carried by the
RH> military pharmacy but it was worth it.

RH> Talked to my mom yesterday; Dad had his first solid foods that morning
RH> They hope he will be home today.

Yes, Don is feeling better. He was worried it was cancer but it's all fixing
up with the meds. He's got bad teeth and did even as a kid. I've been
blessed with less than perfection but good teeth overall. I've had 10
cavities in my whole life and none in the last 3 years. A few older ones have
needed the fillings changed, but nothing worse. No lost teeth other than the
wisdom teeth but Don's headed to total loss probably before long.

I turn 47 this Saturday and by that age, Don had lost at least 10 teeth. He's
still at the 'partial' stage now but the writing is clear. They are starting
to find it hard to find solid teeth to hook partials to.

                                       xxcarol
