it monitors keystrokes? that's something i wasn't aware of... i wonder what
for? i'll agree on the slowing things down part... any additional apps running
on a system will invariably take some cpu time and there's only so much of that
to go around...

yes, those problems have been noted for a long time... i don't recall when they
really got started but...

a firewall's job is only to allow or prevent inbound traffic from entering a
system... ZA was the first that allowed the blocking of outbound traffic based
on several criteria one of which was which app was making the attempt... ZA
can't catch spyware because it doesn't have a clue what spyware is... ZA also
can't catch a virus or a worm for the same reason... 

on that same note, a virus scanner can't catch spyware because it doesn't know
what it is... yes, spyware can arrive due to the actions of a virus or worm but
they can also arrive due to a "drive by install" that you got hit with when
visiting some web site...

additionally, it is possible that something else is causing your lockups and
problems with ZA... many of the spyware apps out there inject themselves into
the winsock dll stack such that all traffic passes thru them... if one of them
is buggy or has gotten corrupted, it is very easy for it to cause problems like
you are seeing... the only real way to tell would be to wipe the system
completely, reload windows, install ZA and see what happens...

my father's machine hasn't run ZA in years and we've moved thru two or three
other firewalls, virus scanners, and spyware scanners... eventually, his system
gets to the point that it just locks up several times a day... even when it is
just sitting there... after some time of this, we save off the important stuff,
dig out the reload disks and give the box a major rebirthing... after that,
everything is AOK for months and months and then it starts again... i keep
telling him that it is something getting in some how, some way... nothing that
we can see as "bad" per se but something, anyway... i'm extremely sure, though,
that what is happening is happening due to some of the "free" sites and
software that he uses... most of those get their funding by monitoring the
sites that folk visit so they can target their advertisements and get more
eyeball time which equates to more $$$ for them for each ad they serve, even
more $$$ for each ad that results in a click and even more above that for each
ad that results in a purchase...

since we're "up the creek" with preventing ads and a lot of monitoring, i
searched for recipes with "creek" and this is what we came up with...

      Title: Lost Creek Sawdust Pie
 Categories: Pies, Desserts, Nuts
      Yield: 8 Servings
 
   1.50 c  Graham cracker crumbs
   1.50 c  Sugar
   1.50 c  Coconut; shredded
   1.50 c  Pecans or walnuts;
           Chopped
   1.00 c  Egg white; unbeaten
 
  Combine all ingredients.  Pour into unbaked pie crust.  Bake at 350
  deg F. for 30-35 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream if desired.
