At one point I thought of doing volunteer food service stuff,
but I figured I'd end up hating cooking (as I couldn't be
the delivery person, after all). My own charitable activities
nowadays are the committee work I do, dishing up nothing
more substantial than the occasional grant or commission.

 The meals here are made at the
 BF> County Home.  I've never tasted one, but they usually smell good.  I

These are wholesome enough, but not particularly exciting,
plus they're dietarily faulty for my father, containing far
too many carbs and too much salt. Which defeats the purpose.
Anyhow, he's taken to telling my brother to buy him stuff
(Szechwan food from Joe's Noodle House, which serves the
saltiest food I know, and cans of congee), because he likes
it better than MoW. So the MoW just keep piling up.

Not a good feeling. But think that potentially, anyhow, the
MoW volunteers could be a lifeline to people who don't get
other visitors, and it's entirely possible that you could
be the one to detect a problem before it's too late.

yield: 1 batch

Cut off all the fat from a loin of mutton, and to each pound of
the lean allow a quart of water. Season it with a little salt and
some shred parsley, and put in some large pieces of the crust of
bread. Boil it slowly for two or three hours, skimming it
carefully.

Beef, veal, or chicken broth may be made in the same manner.

Vegetables may be added if approved. Also barley or rice.
