============================
Hi Ruth,

-> They don't wear mom or dad's rank. I've known a good number of officers
-> and wives, who, had I not known, wouldn't have suspected as they're at
-> ease socialising with both officers and enlisted.

 RH> Off duty and on-duty are two different things I guess.

VERY! much so! Of course I don't have to call the officer "Sir" or
"Ma'am" as Steve does, even off duty quite often. I can get away with
first names if I want to. (G) Funny, even in the enlisted corps, they
usually don't know each other's first names, only rank. It can be
confusing at times because Sergeant is the enlisted E5 grade but most
everybody above that gets called SGT as well--covers Staff Sergeant,
Sergeant First Class and Master Sergeant. First Sergeant usually gets
called "First " or "Top" or similar; Sergeant Major usually gets called
that.

-> RH> I just ^C^Ved the Wiki article. The references were part of what I
-> RH> cut off. It was already long enough to be over the normal size

-> Yes, but as a former sociology/psychology student, this sort of reading
-> always piques my interest. I could have done the study. (G)

 RH> It must have been interesting. It may have been part of someone's
 RH> doctoral dissertation or master's thesis.

I suspect so; there are lots of sub areas that could be further explored
as a thesis as well.

-> RH> They remind me somewhat of Missionary kids. The ones that live
-> RH> overseas in another country or three often react the same way.
 RH> ->
-> They are like MKs in a lot of ways, other ways, very different.
-> Military kids have a good sized group of their peers and culture
-> wherever they're statined. MKs very often only have their own family
-> for American cultural influences and they can be quite different from a
-> large portion of the military families. I could go into this in lots
-> more detail but this isn't the place for it.

 RH> I've seen that too. Some MKs have a hard time reintegrating into US
 RH> society at first.

I know; they don't have the McDs culture that kids growing up in the
states do. As far as that goes, kids in HI have a lot of cultural
differences than their main land counter parts as well. Rice is a
staple in the diet; potatoes are a novelty, usually in the form of
french fries.

-> RH> In my family, my cousin's kids shifted from Air Force to Navy and
-> RH> Army. My first cousin is a retired USAF Master Sergeant (he ran

-> But, the idea of continuity of service is there.  My dad was WWII Navy;
-> Steve is Army; his dad was post WWII Army; David's dad was first AF,
-> then Army; David was AF and Deborah is Army NG.

 RH> My dad (other side of the family tree) was Army, and most of his older
 RH> cousins were in WWII in one branch or another. My cousin's dad was

My dad and his younger brother were both Navy in WWII. Not sure (unless
because he was married with kids and a drafts man) why oldest brother
wasn't in as well.

 RH> exempt from the draft - a needed skill classification put his draft
 RH> number sky high. My mother's father was WWI army (1917-1919)

Same here, as an officer.

-> BTW, any chance you'll be going to MD in July? Hitch a ride with Dave
-> and crew maybe?

 RH> I doubt it. First, I'm working. Second, I can't sit down that long
 RH> these days - at least not anything remotely resembling comfortably.
 RH> An hour's about all I can take. The MS has done a number on some
 RH> nerves and sitting for long periods isn't a good idea.

Well, it was a thought. Can't even hop a plane for Saturday and Sunday?
