==============================
DS> 1. Your brother is a character. Make of that what you will,
 DS> though I don't intend it in a mean-spirited way.

Oh, if you knew him, you might intend it that way. He is
exceedingly difficult, but life is exceedingly difficult
for him as well, poor soul. It must really suck to be him
- not making value judgments or assumptions, but the depth
of bewilderment with which he goes through life is
frightening to me and would no doubt daunt even a more
stable person. The fact that I'm not eager to invite him
to picnic activities says something (though he's lonely
enough that I feel guilty about not doing so).

DS> 2. Is there a difference between the Kikkoman process as
DS> implemented in the US opposed to that in Japan? I was led
DS> to believe they were the same.

I'm sure the process is the same. I used to be able to
tell the difference between domestic and imported Kikkoman
(for one thing, the imported was often CHEAPER), but that
must have been ingredient-based. The list is just wheat,
water, soybeans, and salt, but there's got to be some
variation.

DS> Here is something perhaps no one in the echo ever knew about
DS> me: I was a taxi / medical transport driver. For medical
DS> transports, I earned Connecticut minimum wage. (For taxi
DS> service I earned the same, plus whatever tips came my way.)
DS> Someone might be getting wealthy off that $540 a week, but
DS> unless things have changed since I did it, it might not be
 DS> the driver.

Something that S.Y. said made me think that the guy was the
owner of the company. The fact that he didn't take tips might
have been a tip. But yeah, I know that the grunts behind the
wheel often make very little: in fact, I've discovered that
SuperShuttle drivers are independent contractors with the
responsibility for their own vans, and sometimes they're put
in an impossible squeeze situation. My $4 tip isn't going to
do much for them when I'm the only passenger and much of the
$20-25 goes to the home office or is earmarked for hardware
expenses.

ML> He gets so happy when he thinks about going back.
DS> [sigh] My aunt was the same way. My sympathies.

We've got to play this by ear. Interestingly, as the old
guy improves (slowly, and better doesn't mean very better
- he can walk a few yards with a walker and an attendant),
the urgency he feels to go back home lessens. After all,
reasonable care is being taken of him, and he is doing
virtually the same things as at home - eating, sleeping,
and watching Dr. Phil and The Price Is Right.

ML> I'll try to exchange a weekend of adjusting this box by
ML> my computer guru (heads up, Clean Dave) for a couple Texas
 ML> Roadhouse steaks.
DS> First order of business is to do all the XP updates that are
DS> probably waiting. We'll take it from there.

Carol recommends Firefox, which I'll download as soon as
I get to a broadband source. The one thing I like about
Windows SP2 is that its management of wireless is much
better than that of the original XP. In all other respects
I prefer the old stuff.

DS> How about Saturday night at the Roadhouse, Sunday AM I treat
DS> you to an oyster brunch at Zoe's?

We'll talk.

DS> I started looking into making my own root beer - a draft style,
DS> with ale yeast for a natural carbonation and head and read a
DS> lot of articles that mention wintergreen as the primary flavor
DS> note in modern root beers since sassafras was outlawed by the
DS> FDA as "too carcinogenic" or something.

Sassafras is considered a carcinogen. But what about gumbo?
Perhaps the Cajuns just "file" the FDA rules in the ashcan?
