It will be a first for us too. Last time we moved to Norfolk (before we had a
house) we'd learned a lesson and pre-rented an apartment before arrival at a
reputable place. The apartment wasnt as perfect as we could have found on our
own later, but it was decent. We moved right in with no hotel and an
airmattress plus the stuff packed in our car. Charlotte was a toddler then so
we'd packed her collapsable crib and used that across country. We'd shipped
some stuff ahead so it was ready when we got there. I think it was just a few
days to get it delivered. Rest came later (3 weeks?).

Grin, we leave 5 days clearance for between arrival and move in for stuff like
that. We can always vacate the hotel sooner if we are ready. The realtor has
a sort of 'power of attorny' for shifting the power and water and such to us
so I gather they just do a reading and shift the rest to our names and off we
go. (Normal stuff, apartment style move in and it's already on, just who to
bill).
Flea bombs first day if inspections do not get in the way. We had pets and the
tenant had cats too so.... We expected that. We had the place professionally
treated before they moved in, and they are *supposed* to do that for us, but
if they do not, we will use those simple cans. 5 will be overkill but thats
what we normally do, then again 2 weeks later if any eggs hatch.
CS> enjoy (pub closes at 10pm which is fine with us).
RH> Not our favorite hang out place.
Grin, no but Don and i like to 'simple party' together now and again. This is
just a simple bar with 5-6 seats and not loud. If we do an echo picnic, we'll
pick out some suitable spots (and drivers or taxi's set up in advance) that
folks may enjoy. We do not 'party hardy' but like a few good beers with
conversation at places where that is possible.
Don thinks well of 'Summers Pass' which is a little less than 2 miles from home
in another direction. One of the places we would never suggest, is 'Bow Creek
Inn' (part of a rather nice golf course, also about 2 miles from my house).
It might be good for golfing, but at night it's a hooker place and a local
friend tells me is still the same. *Not* the 'hotel' to stay at. Because
they are locally known also for some soft (MJ) drug use, no military should
stay there.
One of the different 'options' my place offers if folks want to do it, is 1/2
day or 1 day (6 and 12 hour respectively) ocean fishing trips. It would be
very easy to contract a boat just for us. Cost per person would be about 100$
but you keep the catch so tends to pay for itself if you can cache it in a
cooler and bring it home. The incidental cost is if you want them to clean the
fish (I do not know the rate but most places it's about 2$ a fish) and the
guys who help you work for tips (you tip the captain 20% or 20$ and they are
paid out of it). I do not know if any would like to try such, but I had loads
of fun even as a neophyte fisher and that sort of boat has all the reels,
bait, and such.
THere is a difference in the type of fish you get with the shorter trip but
they are all good eating. Grin, imagine a cooking picnic of fish we got
ourselves? Cooked on my built in grill out in the backyard over coals. Sure
other stuff too, but it would be a fun idea!
Clam fest fun, but lookie what I did with this little pan-fry I caught *myself*
(hehehe).
CS> place to eat out at. We get drunk and cant get a cab, it's a 2 mile
CS> walk home on a simple easy path with plenty of light. Sidewalks all
RH> Or we'll do the Designated Driver thing. In MD, we had Joan and Glen
RH> passengers for all the Friday fun stuff--made it more fun, especially
RH> Glen's interest in Steve's Garmon navigator and the wierd way it

Works for me! I am familiar with the local Taxi company and if we need one, we
had best set a time 3-5 days in advance. It's a high use area for such but
oddly not enough taxis to go around so sometimes, you can wait an hour for
one.
CS> long either so doing the shuffle up and down stuff. Good drugs
RH> NO fun! I skipped yesterday and have a lot to go thru today. My back
RH> is behaving however.
CS> though. Bad part, got foot tingles this time and the Doc said if i
CS> were not transferring so soon, he'd limdu me 6 months with descreen
CS> for shipboard until evaluated. Instead, I have referrals to be seen
CS> by medical in Norfolk (if nothing else goes wrong, it waits til then).
RH> Growl..............military beaurocracy!
Yup. FDNF problem makes it worse. Thats why there is an overseas screening. I
no longer screen for overseas without review. They just do not have the
facilities to deal with my problems (age related, it gets some of us). I am
overall healthy except for the lower back and neck. Sadly, overseas screening
isnt very good and they 'resist' descreening us as long as they can get away
with it. grrr. Nuff saidabout horror stories.
RH> have bento boxs now. (G)
CS> Cool. I had a micowave lasagna that Charlotte made me with fancy udon
CS> (tofu and shrimp bits) that Ellen brought over. Don got Popeyes
CS> earlier. Elise brought over rye bread. Eddie dropped off a white
CS> cheesy spinach dish with onions. So much for emptyng the fridge this
CS> weekend! Sumio wantd to take Charlotte to the teen center but she
CS> said she had to stay home and watch me so they played games on her DS2
CS> in her room while i slept in the easy chair.
RH> They're all repaying you for past help. I know, the fridge doesn't ge
RH> cleaned out but you've still got a few more weeks before it absolutely
RH> has to be done.
Not much longer and Don went shopping. Grin, he didnt check the extra freezer
first. He wasnt bad, he just missed that we had frozen 'beef' already and
bought a few TV dinners. His heart is in the right place knowing i'm not at
my best just now and those are fast fix foods.
I think now most of what we have will fit in the smaller freezer in the fridge.
RH> recall seeing smaller turkey rolls when I was a kid (enough for our

CS> Not all are the same. The little Louis (you know what i mean I hope)
CS> water type are definately not the same thing though they have their

RH> Yes, we bought a breast a few months ago & Steve smoked it. More our
RH> taste anyway. There's still a bit in the freezer but I need to get so
RH> cranberry sauce (to make Steve happy) to go with it.
I wish I could transport one of those 'turkey rolls' over to a picnic but i
cant. They are really *very* good. When you eat them either at home or on
the ship, they seems like sliced moist turkey of the best making.
