Ärende: tastes - wine 90

Brunello di Montalcino 78 (Fattoria dei Barbi, Proprieta
Colombini) - honey nose gives way to caramelly (almost
soy sauce). Still fairly acid, moderate tannins. "Olive
oil" flavor - and a bit of cooked fruit. More tannins
come out later. Long (90 sec) finish a little oxidized but
very pleasant, changes to a bit sweetish, spicy toward
the end. I'd say 5 to 10 years too old but still an
interesting wine.

Ironstone Obsession (Symphony) 05 - I had the 03 at Hap's,
and it was a pleasant "Anne" type of wine, so when I saw
this on sale I picked up a bottle. It's a completely different
wine. The other was tropical-fruity, fairly sweet with good
acidity, spicy and sassy, rather filling the spot of a Gewurz.
This was spritzy, with a heavy second fermentation going on,
way less sweet, and very acid: Sauvignon-Blancish aroma and
palate (this means citrus and cat urine), dryish wintergreeny
finish. A most peculiar wine. Perhaps it had died last Saturday.

Barvoursville Phileo n.v., tasted at Tower Oaks Lodge - this
wine gets good notices, but I didn't notice much good about it.
I wonder if I didn't get the tail end of a long-opened bottle
(it's not the style of this place, which goes for BIG beers
and red wines with BIG flavors, none of this sissy delicate
stuff). Anyhow, a faint flowery Muscat aroma, kind of flat
perfumy nothing in the mouth. Surprisingly, more acid than
sweetness, but not enough acid. Bubble gum finish. Quite a
disappointment.

Absolut Ruby Red - I don't see this thing about flavored
vodkas. Back in my day, you could get buffalo-grass-flavored
vodka if you happened to be in the Soviet Union, otherwise
it was Gordon's or Smirnoff. Now, of course, they're the hot
trend. My friend Jackie likes this stuff, so I tried it: it
has, thankfully, a good lot of vodka character but not so
nicely, a bitter rindy quality, quite strong. The stuff is
meant (obviously) as a mixer, but by itself, forget it.

We also tried the Stoli Vanil at a bar where she used to
work, Flynnie's: it tastes sort of like raw cookie dough
and has no business being in a bar. Greg Mayman recently sent
me a picture of how Bacardi Breezers (a kind of low-alcohol
beverage) ring up at one pub in the outback: the ticket says
"poofter drink." That's the way I felt about the Stoli.

Remy Martin VS Petit Champagne Grand Cru is actually a bit
different from the old Remy VS in the frosted bottle. It's
quite light and has a pleasant oaky aspect as well as a
slight bite. The aroma and aftertaste are both in the almondy
family, almost like a blended whiskey. Not bad, but $28 for
3/4 L is a bit much.
