-> 3. After we got back I promptly fell down Carol's
-> stairs and have been pretty immobile since. I had
-> to postpone my flight back ... meanwhile I am relying
-> on a very intermittent, weak kiped wireless signal.
 ->
RH> Which body parts did you mangle this time?

GJ> My sympathies. Your signal was so weak that it didn't get here. It
GJ> must have fallen into the Pacific. What had you been drinking?

[Later] I have now clumsily formulated a reply to your posting which
had got lost leaving Doc's Place, but kindly e-mailed by Dale.

GJ> newspaper is small enough that your man Rupert is not yet interested
 GJ> in taking it over.

 ML> Whose man Rupert?

Although Sir Keith Murdoch's boy Rupert was born in Adelaide, and took
over control of his dad's "News" afternoon paper there, in his bid to
control the rest of the world he took USAn citizenship a year or two
ago, so he is definitely yours, all yours! (Lucky you!) BTW, he has
already chosen your next President, and she is a Democrat, sort of.

ML> He is aware of its existance, of course, but so
GJ> far his only action against it has been banning its printing by any
GJ> Adelaide presses, all of which he controls. The closest press not
GJ> controlled by him is 80 km away in the country, so every week the
GJ> Independent Weekly has to be trucked in from Mannum.
ML> I wonder what would happen if someone started an independent
ML> printing operation closer to the Mecca of evil. Would it be
ML> shut down immediately by strikes, sabotage, bombs, or arson?

Nothing so un-subtle. If it imposed any sort of real threat, the owner
would find that rolls of paper were not available, or else it would
just be quietly bought out of existance. This seems to be his modus
operandi - if a small competitor can make a success of the newspaper
business, Rupert makes an offer that cannot be refused. He has thus
collected most of the small papers around Australia.

GJ> Ah, now I understand. A more familiar aroma. I could ask you to
GJ> define that more precisely, but out of consideration for the delicate
 GJ> sensibilities of our readers, I won't.
ML> You are always welcome, of course, to experience it in person.

Thankfully, while I can savour it vicariously through you, that will
not be necessary.

GJ> I shall point that out to him. He phoned yesterday, asking if I could
GJ> take him to collect another 50 litres of vino rosso ordinare, for my
ML> You know that his money is going to fly away very soon.
 ML> I don't know that it's your God-given responsibility to
ML> steer him from his chosen course, but a gentle nudge in
ML> one direction or another might be advisable.

His predictable response to any nudge is to go in the opposite
direction as forcefully as the initiating nudge. He maintains that in
buying the bulk red at $1.75 a litre he is making great savings -
which he then spends on more old computers. Also, if he gets better
quality wine he says he drinks too much of it, which is not so good
for his health - he says. So really, I am helping him. :)
(Thinks: who is MLoo to talk of money "flying away"?)

GJ> That is surprising, as physiologically the 17th century rich would
GJ> have been similar to our contemporaries, and therefore I would expect
GJ> them to enjoy similar flavours, and reject the unpleasant.

ML> Have you ever tasted the researched original recipes? They can
ML> be pretty nasty, with flavors that clash and overuse of costly
ML> ingredients just for the sake of. Not unlike fancy restaurant
 ML> cuisine sometimes even now.

I agree that some of the original recipes were created more for the
social status effect of the rare or exotic ingredients than actual
flavour. After all, are larks' tongues any tastier than common old
sparrows' or chooks' tongues? Did Cleopatra's vinegar taste any
better with pearls dissolved in it? Although I have not tried most
of these ancient recipes, I think it would be unlikely that they would
have become famous enough to be preserved if the result had been
positively nasty, however impressive the list of ingredients was.

ML> No, I haven't had swan publicly, but there is a good body of
ML> literature regarding that subject. The consensus is that they
ML> taste like a tough old version of sea ducks, which taste bad.

It has been said that anything can be made into a tasty dish with the
right recipe, though I have not yet heard of a good one for seagulls -
or swans.

      Title: Hare Soup
 Categories: Irish, Soup/stew, Traditional
      Yield: 1 Servings

      1 Hare
      2 Onions
      1 Red Herring
    1/2 pt Red Wine
      6 pt Water
      3 oz Barley
           Salt

Take a large old hare and joint it. Place with other ingredients
(except the barley) ina pot over a low fire and simmer for three
hours. Strain into a stew pan and add the already boiled barley.
Scald the liver of the hare, bruise it, rub it through a fine sieve,
and add it to the soup. Keep hot until ready to serve, but do not
allow to boil. Recipe by: Traditional Irish Recipes - John Murphy
