Anne is learning (grin)! She was scheduled
 for a "science in the classroom" seminar 
all day saturday...but opted out in favor 
of recovering a bit more stamina! Monday 
she'll have to face a room full of second 
graders who were missing her all week! 

-> The bike guy will have my second bike (yes, I have 2, like some folks
have a 
-> second car for when the primary is in the shop) ready next Saturday for
pickup.
-> The cultech, needs a few parts he has to order so will be 2 weeks then
back
-> once
-> the back baskets arrive to have them added.
-> 

Where Amanda is doing her PhD work is University 
of Cal at Davis...and Davis is recognized as the 
most bike friendly town in the USA...more bikes 
than cars! It doesn't hurt that the area is as 
flat as a pool table! You see all sorts of bikes 
but the cultech "comfort" type is very popular!
 Easy to pedal and comfortable to ride and able 
to handle a load! Amanda has three baskets on hers
...one in front of the handlebars and one on each 
side of the rear wheel. Now that she's out at the
labs in Bodega Bay (much hillier) she doesn't ride 
as much but now she does it more for fun and exercise 
than a mode of transportation!

-> Mostly the cultech needs a tuneup (stop laughing, it's the chains) and
new
-> break
-> pads plus one break cable was degrading and has no more left to shorten
so has
-> to be replaced.  One of the tires (front) is also showing too much wear 

I try to get Amanda to remember to have 
her bike serviced at least once a year 
in Davis....they have (obviously) really 
good bike shops there!


-> traction isnt great and being replaced.  Foot pedal on left is wearing a
bit
-> on the outer side so he's replacing that too.  Seat cover cracking a
little so
-> that also.  A little rust developing along the handlebars so he's going
to fix
-> that and recoat them.  Front basket (a non-cultech big one in plastic
coated 
-> white over wire) getting rust at joints but he's going to look for a big
one 
-> like that to replace it.  Not a USA standard item (this is for grocery
shopping
-> not kid's use cute).

-> My second bike is a fairly standard asian brand, also a workhorse but
not of

-> same quality.  It's inside vice in the front window displacing the 'new
bikes'
-> area <grin>.  We joked that the cultech was a pedigreed clydsdale and

-> a plowhorse.  Both look distinctly different beside the normal USA faire
with

daily use.

-> A kid I know from picking Charlotte up at school, came in while we were

Kmart 
-> special and the chains are failing.  I've seen him rechain them as I

-> Charlotte. I'd mentioned this place to him and he rode over to see if

-> fix his.  Just happenstance that he arrived same time.  Neat kid but his

-> is built of virtually pot-metal.  I think I could bend it's center pipes

It's our "disposable economy", nothing is meant to 
really last only replaced when broken!
