Yep, my budget is regularly shot that way. Makes one almost
excuse the ubiquity of McDonald's and KFC.

On occasion I've actually had good meals while in the air -
there are certain things that are better there than anyplace
else. I don't know how the airline companies manage to do it,
but for some reason I've had consistently good smoked fish
(sablefish on Singapore, salmon on British and United), and
the best gnocchi I've ever had were on a United flight out of
Los Angeles (before bankruptcy). Also excellent steaks on
the rare occasion. In general, though, the food isn't as
good as Applebee's, and the snacks aren't as good as at the
movie theater (not that I go to either of these very often).

So I did go up the coast and visited my friends, who had a
cookout despite the depressing 60F rain. Jackie's sister
made chicken breast in a Greek marinade that somehow to me
tasted of lemon and nutmeg, with orzo-feta-green-bean salad
(I picked out the green beans). For appies, hummus and pita.
For afters, s'mores. I ate a full but not enormous meal.

The wines were an undistinguished Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
and an equally undistinguished Cotes de Luberon, both inky
tannic '03s, almost indistinguishable. Interestingly, someone
poured a refill of one into half a glass of the other, and
the result was quite different, and actually quite bad.

Luckily for me and my jacket which has lost its waterproofness,
Christine dropped me off at the apartment on her way back south.

There's a California-Arizona chain called Lee's Sandwiches
that serves these. They're pretty good, a few slices of roast
with some sweet-sour vegetable on top, in a crusty baguette,
although if you're sensible you'll order "double meat."

                 Orzo With Feta, Green Beans, And Tomatoes

   Amount  Measure       Ingredient -- Preparation Method

   10      ounces        haricots verts -- or green beans
    1      cup           orzo -- rice-shaped pasta
    1      medium        onion
    2                    garlic cloves
    3      medium        vine-ripened tomatoes
    2      tablespoons   olive oil
    1      tablespoon    white-wine vinegar
    1      tablespoon    chopped fresh flat-leafed parsley leaves
    1      cup           crumbled feta
 
 Fill a 4-quart kettle three fourths full with salted water and bring to a boil

 for beans and orzo.
 
 Chop onion and mince garlic.  Quarter and seed tomatoes.  Cut quarters
lengthwi
 se into 1/4-inch-thick slices.  Trim beans and cut into 1-inch pieces.  In a
la
 rge skillet cook onion and garlic in oil over moderate heat until onion is
soft
 ened.  Add tomatoes and cook, stirring, until tomatoes are softened, about 2
mi
 nutes.  Remove skillet from heat.
 
 Have ready a bowl of ice and cold water.  In boiling salted water blanch beans

 1 minute.  With a slotted spoon transfer beans to ice water to stop cooking.

 rain beans well in a colander and pat dry.  Add beans to tomato mixture and
ret
 urn water in kettle to a boil.  Boil orzo until al dente and drain in
colander.
   Add orzo to bean mixture with vinegar, parsley, feta, and salt and pepper to

 taste, tossing to combine well.
