Ärende: some news
=================
Hi Carol,

RH> So, you should have good cholesterol. They say that soy does help

CS> Well, the first set is back and in a chatty email, Doc says both of us
CS> are holding well on that score, me a little high but acceptable and
CS> mostly 'good type'. Calcium tests take longer but some measurements
CS> matched to last set show I need to increase my calcium intake. Grin,
CS> kinda fun being a lab rat.

Fun when you have a doctor who's easy to work with. I have to say "good
bye" in a couple of weeks to my pulminologist; when I first started
working with him 5 years ago, he said that he might do some things I
wouldn't like but be for my own good. There hasn't been much of that
the last few years but we've developed a better than average
patient/doctor relationship. He has stepped in at times to suppliment
other doctors care when it was for the betterment of my over all health,
not just concerned with my lungs & nothing more. He will be a hard one
to replace.

CS> Neither Don nor Charlotte like cottage cheese but he wants me to eat a
CS> cup a week. He's already got a baseline on my green sources eating
CS> and it's not quite as much as i need although it 'should have been'.
CS> It's not like I have a major disaster here, but I'm showing some bone
CS> loss when I shouldnt according to my eating habits. The only major
CS> shift in Japan other than off red meats mostly, is cheese went way

We haven't changed much in our cheese eating habits (high) but have
switched from mostly cow's milk to mostly soy for drinking and on
cereal. We've also picked up on our yogurt consumption, especially
Steve, in the last couple of years. Also, we've eliminated just about
all pork (me rather reluctantly) and most red meat from our diet and
added more fresh fish.

CS> I doubt any here track my MM postings close enough to have really
CS> noted my cooking habits that well, but I noticed it once I was aware
CS> of the bone marrow craving I was developing where a 'fix' was needed
CS> every 3 weeks. As my cheese consumption went down, my use of bone
 CS> went up.

Sort of like when I had the major chocolate craving some years ago only
to find out my asthma had gone into a major flare up that spiraled
downward into bronchitis-pnuemonia-bronchitis. I've avoided that over
here, probably because I've not had to deal with really cold weather for
a prolonged time.

CS> Apparently the only thing I am doing different, is I dont eat fish
CS> bones or shrimp shells. My diet 'should' be calcium high enough but
CS> I'm not absorbing it right. He also looked over Charlotte and advised
CS> we keep giving her a healthy cup of milk with dinner as well as keep
CS> up the habit of a bottle of floridated water a day (something he's
CS> advising his Japan patients to do as well as there's a distinct long
CS> term tooth benefit in childhood).

Sounds like he's got his act togethr quite well. He appears to be
incorporating the best of traditional and modern medical practice; I
know you'll miss him when you move back to the states next year.

CS> quite as much calcium as I need? As we age, thats an odd one that
CS> goes up as we women get older.

RH> Very much so, the need. Unfortunatly, a lot of stuff can leach it fro
RH> our bones too easily.

CS> Yup. Test not back yet on the specifcs, but looks like we are
CS> catching this one early enough.

Good. I was caught just before turning 40 with osteopenia. It's stayed
in that range over the years--sometimes a bit better, sometimes a bit
worse, depending on how much weight bearing exercise I've been able to
do, eating habits, use of various meds, etc. I'm tryng to keep from
slipping into full blown osteoporosis; OTOH, I know my boes will never
be in the "normal" range. Good thing I like soy milk, cheese, ice cream
(G), yogurt, etc and will push the greens more.

Catch you later,
Ruth
