 In our area, Wegmans sort of forces competitive prices
 on all the major competitors. And I am aware this also
 has to do with state laws on pricing. Where my Mom lives,
 a state authority sets minimium prices for eggs and milk
 according to a farmers' cooperative scheme, so they never
 go on "sale" unless they are near the sell-by date.
 She envies my fresh-milk pricing, but tells me about
 "deals" she can get on other stuff I cannot imagine!

 I couldn't shop efficiently without access to a car,
 which you don't use very often. My Farmers Market is
 a few miles away, so I save that for Saturdays, and
 both the independent grocer where I am getting good
 prices on meats and the Weggies where I get some
 staples are on the way there and back, with only about
 1/2 block out of the way from the only possible route.
 If I didn't have a car, I would also be limited to a
 Convenient Store, or when more ambitious, to a Tops
 (like your Stop 'n Shop") and maybe a Wegmans, but
 both with some scary transitions across highways.
 My options were better when I moved here, for better
 groceries when I couldn't drive. Smaller units of
 chain groceries I could walk to in a snowstorm are
 gone now.

 Or have a plan when the stuff goes on sale but only
 for 4-5 pounds at a time. I must admit, though,
 this does limit my other choices of what I want to cook
 sometimes. I have let some things spoil while using
 the minimum buy on a sale item. There are some
 greens I should be using tonight but don't fit with
 the beef I got on sale. Maybe tomorrow.
