(Edame beans) I wonder if they are easy to find stateside?

RH> where you have to seek; it just says that ye will find.

CS> True. Either way, there are still lots of food items i havent tried
CS> yet. What I sincerely hope is that others will just 'try something
CS> new' now and again as i do.

RH> I do now and then but not on every shopping trip. Looks like Steve wi

I dont do it every shopping trip either now, but often enough something 'odd'
strikes me and I get it. Since that can happen several times in one trip, I'd
say I average still once per trip if not actually.

BTW, it's eel season <g>.

RH> quick check this morning. Found out my PCM had been hanging on to my
RH> records since I saw him last week but they are now back at the records
RH> room.

Sorry on the foot there! Least they found your records!

CS> I have to backtrack on this. Seems from 'google' that Panko is a
CS> wheat based product from flaked bread. What does that mean? It means
 CS> I'm getting
CS> something we locally call 'panko' and cant tell the difference of at
CS> all in looks or flavor but is made of rice. Sasebo-ism? Maybe it
CS> comes in rice format too?

CS> I'm all wrong that it's rice based but it is I assure you here. No
 CS> doubt at all.

RH> So maybe panko is a generic name and you would have to specify what ki
RH> you want if you want to be picky.

Thats what it turns out to be, based on translation help. It seems, the
product is made from 'rice bread' from 'rice flour' hence locally called
'panko' when dealing with us folks who know that name. 'Pan gohan' may be the
right name? I missed part of that as Don was trying to translate.

CS> Here's the funny part about Japan. No 'Asia grocery' who can
CS> translate. Just folks selling things with 'engrish' names and I've
CS> mentioned before that this can be a trial when I try to post a recipe.
CS> I didnt know there was a wheat based bread version until I checked
 CS> Google.

RH> The old "learn something new evry day" policy at work again.

Yup! Anyways, for recipe purposes any 'panko' you find would work the same
though I guess those other ones are wheat flour based (white wheat). For your
use, see if 'rice flour' works? Since rice flour comes in plain and 'sweet'
you will have to see which you can get. I would be using plain but sweet may
be ok to make a tempura batter.

Check the label of those expensive tempura batter boxes and see if some dont
use rice? I imagine they do. None in my MM reference that but some of the
most 'authentic looking' ones just say 'flour' and not which type. Rice flour
is much easier to find out here in town....

RH> Lord only knows----and He ain't a-tellin'!

RH> train to Misawa. She told me that their luggage had to go on a separa
RH> freight train & was hoping it wouldn't get lost; I assured her that it
RH> probably down to a science over there.  We pick them up next Tuesday;
RH> it'll be interesting to hear their tales.

CS> Tell us how it goes when the time comes!

RH> Will do; it's actually Wed.; I looked at the calendar wrong.

Done that a few times myself!

CS> Don oaded up some in a little baggie for our next trip to Tonoo. I
CS> plan to show it to the 'panko lady' and see what she can show me.
CS> She's got some 40 bins of 'stuff' there, much of which I havent tried

RH> Better hurry up; time's getting short!

 CS> ;-) Definatley

RH> But you've got longer over there than we do here since you did a COT/P
RH> & we just did 2 FSTE's. Our time is up in August.

Yes, I saw. Looking forward to the land of magnolias? Come around August
2007, we may be looking for a more southerly picnic site perhaps!

                                       xxcarol
