   Early photographs would be

Early photographs of the prosperous show them to be about
as fat as you'd expect from the portraiture. Early photographs
of the neurasthenic, such as Abraham Lincoln and Charles
Baudelaire, show them as being rather slender, as expected.

The ferry company would have to do the ploy once on each end,
though, lest there be too many boats on one side and too few
on the other at the end of the day.

"Weak at resisting their advances" is a bit of an understatement.
It is my understanding that he would wander drunkenly to the
prettiest young thing in sight and ask her "can I [two more
words]," and an astonishing proportion of the pretty young
things were amenable. This was the testimony, anyhow, of one of
the (admiring male) escorts assigned to Thomas on one of his
poetry tours in America.

All these questions were asked, but another unknown is precisely

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Steak & Vegetable Casserole
 Categories: Casseroles, Ground beef, Mince, Neat
      Yield: Serves 4-6

    500 g  Ground Beef (1 lb)
     30 g  Butter (1 oz)
      1    Onion, chopped
      1    Red Capsicum, seeded &
           -chopped
      1 c  Long-grain Rice
      2 pk Chicken Noodle Soup
      4 c  Boiling Water
           Salt & Pepper

Brown ground beef in melted butter in saucepan. Drain off fat & place
browned beef in greased casserole dish. Cook onion & capsicum in melted
butter, add to beef. Brown the rice lightly in pan by stirring over
moderate heat 2-3 minutes. Add rice to casserole. Sprinkle contents of
the 2 packets of chicken noodle soup over the beef mixture. Pour 4 cups
of boiling water over all & mix well. Bake uncovered at 180C (350F) for
30 minutes then cover & cook a further 30 minutes. Season with pepper
before serving. Serves 4-6.
