Mine is fairly sketchy, certainly not that of a physicist, nor of
a real flier. One does have to bear in mind that the Machspeed
takes into account not only the speed of the aircraft, but its
speed relative to the medium in which the sound is transmitted.
I wonder what the speed of sound is in water, and whether one
could construct a cool streamlined undersea rocket vehicle that
exceeded Mach 1.

Well, Newton to Hanscom is about 10 miles as the crow flies.
That's about 2 minutes at normal cruise for a civilian
aircraft or, say, 45 seconds at Mach 1. Half an hour in
daytime traffic, of course, so, as you say, it depends on
your frame of reference.

The booms would probably not occur so close to base but
probably could be heard for quite a distance anyway.

There were other military runways as well. Pease in New Hampshire;
the Weymouth NAS; etc.

Fairly likely, that - we were on the bus waiting for
some luggage to get sorted out or something (turns out
that despite its having Royal Caribbean tags, it was
picked up by another cruise line - that was resolved
in not too much time), and the execs went back into the
airport (where the food is likely not to be of the
freshest anyhow), then brought it out through the heat
and back into the bus, where we feasted on grease that
was apparently tainted with bugs.

Yogurt wouldn't be the best solution for me!

Something in ginger is an indicator and turns pink in an acid
environment. The Japanese take advantage of this, making lovely
rose-petal pink ginger slices to go with their sushi.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.02

      Title: New Potatoes with Horseradish Sauce
 Categories: Vegetables
      Yield: 4 servings

      2 lb New potatoes
      1 c  Plain yogurt; creme
           -fraiche, or smoothly
           -blended tofu
      3    Inch piece fresh horseradish
           -root, peeled and grated
           -OR 4T bottled grated white
           -horseradish
    1/8 ts Sugar
           ;salt and white pepper to
           -taste

  Gently boil potatoes until they can be pierced easily with a fork.
  Remove from heat and drain.

  Combine remaining ingredients, and pour over potatoes.

  Let sit for a few minutes to allow flavors to marry.  Serve warm.

  Per serving:  245 cals, 6.5g prot, 1g fat, 52g carbo, 4mg chol, 203
  sod, 5g fiber.

  Helpful hints:  Creme fraiche is a cultured, slightly thickened cream
  with a milder taste than sour cream.  If using tofu, try to find a
  silken variety; silken tofu has the creamiest consistency.
