================================
Hi Michael,

RH> Doesn't sound like fun to me. I didn't think a pear had that much acid
RH> in it to cause a reaction.

ML> I'm not sure what it was. It might have been acid - it was a
ML> singularly unsweet pear. In fact, now that I think of it, there
ML> was a certain amount of tannin in this pear.

Well, now it sounds like you either have to give up eating all pears or
just that variety. Some are naturally sweeter than others so you might
want to try a different type.

RH> Sounds about as smart as what my mom did after one of my younger
RH> sisters had her tonsils out. My parents were big believers in tomato
RH> soup, ginger ale and toast as foods for when we were sick so my mom
RH> fixed a bowl of tomato soup for my sister's lunch.

ML> I had a friend once whose aunt or cousin or something had been to
ML> hospital for an operation. After the operation, one of the nuns
ML> came in with a bowl of tomato soup. The patient (who was very
ML> young at the time) started wailing horribly. It was later determined
ML> that she had thought that this was a big bowl of blood that she had
ML> to eat to replace what had been lost in the procedure.

That is funny; my mom's is more "smack the head, how could I have been
so dumb?" kind of thing. I could see where, if the patient was young,
that being a somewhat expected reaction. Chicken noodle soup, the other
soup for when we were sick, would have made more sense for my mom to
fix. It's quite probably there wasn't any on the shelf (Campbells or
store brand being the mainstays for my parents) at the time.

ML> Yes, I have a cruel side, too.
RH> Watch out, it may back fire on you some day. (G)

ML> So far it's my nice side that has backfired most. Stories
ML> that I'd put in the echo if it were an adult-only one. I'm
ML> reading a book called The Maestro Myth, which seems to
ML> indicate that in most cases the esteem in which a conductor
ML> is held is in direct proportion to how nasty he is.

Interesting thought. Near the end of our time in HI, Steve, as first
sergeant for the company, was expected to take a pie in the face as part
of a company fund raiser (all senior leadership got pie'd). He was
trying to get the soldiers to raise a minimum of $100. for the honor of
pie-ing him but it was slow going at first. One of his troops said
something to me on the effect that it was hard to raise money for doing
that (pie-ing him) for somebody who was so well liked. I think the
final total was a bit over $100. tho. The funniest one was the company
executive officer. His wife was out to.................here with their
baby but she out bid everybody else for the honor of pie-ing her
husband. She then turned to him and asked "honey, can I borrow the money
from you?" to the amusement of all gathered. The baby was born about 4
days later.

RH> It just doesn't sound that appealing. I have had my blood pressure
RH> meds changed in the last few months so now, if I wanted, I can have
RH> grapfruit juice in the morning with them. So far I've stayed with
RH> orange juice but it's nice to know I've the option.

ML> So they know that grapefruit doubles the effect of some of these
ML> medications. So why not have people drink grapefruit juice and
ML> take a half dose of medicine?

I don't know; ask the pharmacutical industry. It could be, for some
people, grapefruit juice will not double the blood pressure but cause
enough varience in it to be harmful.

RH> BTW, are you flying into Binghamton on pre picnic Thursday and do you
RH> have a ride to Windor? We will be close enough that we can do it,

ML> Thanks - I am riding up with the Shipps after all, as getting to
ML> and/or from Binghamton is grossly expensive. I'm planning on
ML> staying at Pumpkin Pine with you and have reserved one room of
ML> the suite for the night after you leave. The Fords have agreed
ML> to take me to Syracuse the next day. I got a great fare: from
ML> Dave Sac's to BWI, followed by an open leg filled by the Shipps,
ML> then Syracuse to BWI, then BWI to Boston, all of this seven
ML> dollars more than Baltimore to Binghamton one way.

OK, just didn't want to leave you stranded at the airport. We're
leaving Sunday, driving probably a bit over half of the way to
Charlotte, NC. We'll get there Monday, spend the night with our friends
and go on to Savannah on Tuesday.

 ML> Title: Homemade Grape Nuts
 ML> Categories:
 ML> Yield: 20 Cups

That's a lot (!) of grape nuts. I like the cereal but would probably cut
the recipe for a yield of about 25%.

Catch you later,
