Ärende: summer gardens in ny [1]
====================================================================
Hi Janis,

JK> to the > trees when they are blooming. The state lost about 80% of the
JK> crop last > year, don't know about this year, thanks to late cold
 JK> snaps.

JK> I have a feeling it will be a similar story for NY Apples this fall.

My folks say their trees are loaded--same with the bosc pear and the
cherry tree was.

>> We've been getting really humid weather this month.. much more so than
>> I remember in other years. Probably has to do with the water table in

JK> > OK, thanks for the head's up on the humidity.

JK> Hmm.. did you tell the people at the place you're staying at that you
JK> have Asthma? Just wondering if they'll have an air-conditioner in
JK> there .... so you can sleep..

No, we'd not mentioned it. If there's a fan, I should be able to handle
it--I hope.

>> usually have a lot of carob around since I buy it bulk.
JK> > I've not bought any since probably we lived in NC. I bought it there
JK> > just about the whole time after we found out about it.

JK> It was pretty well known in the area I grew up in.. we were using
JK> carob powder we'd get at specialty shops in Warwick (shops for herbs,
JK> spices, etc.). It was really popular back then because it was so sweet
JK> compared to coco... and there were a lot of people who were allergic
JK> to chocolate in our crowd.

Interesting that there was a cluster of chcocolate specific allergies.

JK> > How long did it take the doctors to diagnose it? I've read of some
JK> times > where that (and lupis) aren't properly diagnosed for years.

JK> Not long at all.. finding a good doctor is what took me forever though
JK> :( I woke up one morning numb from the waist down.. went to one doctor
JK> who told me it was because I was nursing and 'probably' had a folic
JK> acid defeciency (the folic acid he prescribed helped (g)), he then he
JK> sent me to a neurologist when the problem returned. The neurologist
JK> of the problem I think, is some doctors don't consider it MS "for
JK> sure" until certain symptoms show up - or perhaps some people have a
JK> number of problems and MS is only one of them.

Good that you got the diagnosis fast, bad that the doctors were so
uninformed.

>> I've been very fortunate with it compared to some people. And as far
JK> > Thank God for small favors.

JK> Yes, indeed. My doc. in Manhatten told me that most people with MS
JK> have it like I do, so that's also a good thing to hear.

So you are in good company, numbers wise at least. (G)

JK> > Like our two; they knew they had to help so mom could have a decent

JK> I didn't count on them helping much to be honest.. don't forget they
JK> were so small. No, I knew I just had to deal with this and make it
JK> work .. for everyone in our family. So I found other things to do with

I didn't really have a lot of trouble (at least it wasn't diagnosed)
until I was in my 30s. Sometimes I wish it had been discovered earlier,
other times, I'm glad it wasn't.

JK> myself and my sparetime, instead of acting as I mentioned to Burt
JK> here.. That's when I taught myself to program. That's also when I got
JK> into gardening and cooking (and we were also pretty broke then (vbg)).

I know the broke feeling; I've learned to be pretty "creative" in
cooking over the years. Some things have stayed with us like the Monday
Night Surprise. (G)

>> > favorite one would have a long line at sometimes, the oddest hours.
>> One of the restaurants we went to the other day, Morning Star Chinese
>> restaurant, piled food on the plates much like you describe, as I was
>> telling Sean in another message. It was quite a meal :)

JK> > So how much did you bring home? (G)

JK> We brought home what we thought was a ton.. Ron and I finished it for
JK> lunch the next day though, so maybe it wasn't as much as we'd
 JK> thought.. :)

Or you were hungry-er than you thought.

>> taking their time but that's ok.. the Bush Blue Lake guys are quite
>> overproducing (grin). That's another one I plant really heavy, as I do
>> the peas.. i.e., I don't follow the package instructions typically.

JK> > I think you'll have some willing takers if offered produce at the
 JK> > picnic. (G)

 JK> That's good :)

Well, you've seen how helpful we are here..................

>> 1/3 cup olive oil
>> 1/4 cup Balsamic vinegar, or tarragon vinegar

>> flakes. Pour over potatoes. Add parsley. Toss gently. Red wine may
>> be used instead of vinegar.

JK> > Looks good enough to eat. I'd probably use red wine vinegar instead
JK> of > the red wine itself.

JK> The Balsamic vinegar is the one you'd do best using if you weren't
JK> going to use wine. You could use red wine vinegar instead of course -
JK> depends on your taste. I find balsamic is much milder.

It would depend on what mood I'm in, where the moon is, etc--I've both
on the shelf. I could try both & see what we liked better.
