Hi Janis,

JK> > Mixed blessing there--you can only do so much with crab apples.

JK> I don't do anything with them.. intentionally (grin). One more thing
JK> to cook down for not such great flavor (g). But the trees look
JK> absolutely beautiful when they are in full bloom :)

Yes, they do. That can almost make up for the lack of decent fruit. I
know that jelly can be made from the apples but what else?

JK> > If it's not too hot, I should be OK then.

JK> Pray this humidity breaks.. we must have some incredible low sitting
 JK> on us ...or something...

And, in hindsight, things did work out well for the pcnic, weather wise.
The B&B had air conditioning in the rooms and the weather was nice
overall. Beat what we came back to in GA--99 on Tuesday, 102 on Wed.
and 100 on Thursday. Then a front came thru and we've been in the low
90s, low humidity since.

>> of them might have just not liked what chocolate was doing to their
>> complexions (bg). It was very popular to sue carob then.
 JK> > --- (G)

JK> haha.. quite a typo.. brain working in it's own world, hands working
 JK> in another Lol

I know the feeling. (G)

JK> > chocolate with no other recourse. They probably have no idea what
JK> carob > is other than an interesting word. (G)

JK> Understand.. and it makes sense. Unless you visited health-food
JK> stores even way back then, you wouldn't find it most likely.. We had a
JK> cultish-type group that lived in Warwick that was part of the
JK> Gurdgief/Nyland movement here in the USA and they opened up several
JK> health-food type stores in the village of Warwick. Crazy people,
JK> mostly, but some nice stores (grin). This would have been about
JK> 1967-68.. Pretty much all of them left town when Nyland died though..
JK> I guess they didn't feel that attached to Gurdgief's philosophy.. or
JK> money ran out when Nyland wasn't supporting them any longer (that's
 JK> what I think (g)).

Sounds logical. That's about the time frame that the "hippies" (as my
dad would call them) started discovering the Catskills.

>> like I did.. MS has plateaus that you have to get past timewise (in
>> years) to establish the type you have, for the most part.

JK> > Which makes it even ore of a pain to treat.

JK> Yes, I'm sure it can be for some doctors.. but that's why I go to NYC.
JK> The 3-hour drive is worth it, to have someone who can look at you and
JK> tell exactly what's going on just by how you walk or talk. That's
JK> been my experience at least..

And, having finally found a good doctor, you don't want to change. I
know the feeling; I've dealt with so many doctors and dentists all my
(married) life. Some I wished I could keep forever; others, good bye
was not very painful.

>> Well, allegies and such change a lot after you have children, and as
>> you get older they'll change again.. so perhaps it wouldn't have shown

 JK> > It's possible. Looking back, I realise I had a lot of symptoms
that JK> were > written off as other problems--usually as colds (seems
to be a JK> generic > catch all term with my parents) that were
undoubtedly asthma JK> or allergy > problems. 20/20 hindsight.

 JK> Yep :)

And too, now I know what to look for in certain illnesses.

>> different types of cooking.. like sushi, chinese food, etc., though I
>> still make a lot of Italian dishes of course.

JK> > I try different bits and pieces of other culltures--a fair amount of
JK> it > stays with us. Sometimes we have to do creative substitutions as
JK> in no > ti leaves are available here but that's what makes life
 JK> interesting. (G)

JK> Sure, when you've been moved to another culture, it would be strange
JK> not to cook with what's 'around' (g).. that what I thought when we
JK> moved to Louisville. I still made some Italian food, but I made more
JK> pulled pork, and burgoo, etc. since that's what was around :) It was a
JK> cool place to be really.. a touch of the North there, and a good solid
JK> southern cooking tradition as well. Plus being not 'huge' city ..

Sounds like it was an interesting place. We've adapted some southern
cooking into our way of life but tried to make them healthier. Done
that with quite a number of cultures and foods actually.

>> wondering if those plants that I see there are skunk cabbage Lol -
>> should know pretty soon .. Yes, even the weeds look so healthy in my

JK> > And we wwill all give our opinions next week. (G)

JK> Well, your opinions will be funny, that's for sure :) Between this
JK> miserable "no-spring" spring, and then that drug I was taking, my
JK> garden really took a hit. But there's some stuff doing quite well..
 JK> Lovely asparagus fern Lol..

It was a nice looking jungle for a few days. (G) But, we all enjoyed
ourselves. Any comments from the trash pick up crew about the remains
of the durian?

>> probably see the Dandelion greens if I wanted to :) I know one
>> health-food store that sells them :)

JK> > Young ones are good eating I understand. Then they get bitter. A
JK> hot > bacon sweet sour dressing is good on greens like that.

JK> Makes sense.. I've had them in salads.. :)

They are good in a wilted salad over mashed potatoes.
