Hi Janis,

JK> > Same here; you'd need lots of sugar in it. Besides, the apples are
JK> puny > thing if I remember right. It would take a lot to fill hte

JK> hahahahaha.. don't tempt me into trying it (laugh).. we have two trees
JK> that are LOADED with crabapples every year :) :)

OK, I won't tmept you--this year. (G)

JK> Oh, today we went to my daughter's house.. they're thinking of moving
JK> because they need more room for the 3 boys.. Alex being 13 soon ought
JK> to see the house they are thinking of moving to..It's a great house
JK> outside the city of Ithaca.. built in about 1810 ... there are apple
JK> trees and plum trees in the backyard.. which of course we had to try..
JK> boy.. outrageously good plums :) We'll probably have to help them

Sounds neat. Apple butter and plum preserves, apple pie, apple sauce,
plum sauce, etc.

JK> with this move $$ wise.. But it's that nice of a house.. It had been
JK> built for the parson in a small village outside Ithaca in the 1800's..
JK> it's absolutely beautiful. If I was rich, I'd buy it (g). The owners
JK> only want to rent it though (g).

Too bad--any chance they will change their mind?

>> turned very cold (to MY taste (grin)). It's been like that since..

JK> And today in Ithaca it was back up to the high eighties.. I'd bet it
JK> was the same in Windsor all day :).. so maybe there's hope for the
 JK> tomatoes.

Don't give up hope until it frosts.

>> unusual.. wish my memory was better (grin).. I also don't remember it
>> being this chilly in August last year.. I'm really worried about my
JK> > It iss unusual for your area but not a bit east in the Catskills.

 JK> Yep, definitely.

Some years are like that.

JK> > river should keepyour temps more moderated--if it has had a chance
JK> to > warm up over the summer.

JK> See, that's the problem.. remember our spring was about non-existant..

So you're having spring now with a bit of fall beginning as well. (G)

JK> I don't know really though.. it's been too many years since I took
JK> Earth Science in High School ... I have a feeling the water around
JK> here is very cold still.. just a guess. You don't see as many people
JK> fishing in the Delaware, that's for sure... Saw a few today.. but I've
JK> seen more in other warmer years.

So much for the global warming theorists.

JK> > Dad is finally getting a bit of a blush on his tomatoes. He always

JK> Oh blush, like "red" :) Not here, not as of today.. I check every day
 JK> darnit :) :)

Probably they will all ripen at once. (G)

JK> > ripened. Ergo, the house can have rows of tomatoes along
JK> windowsills > and other places in various stages of ripeness.

JK> Best way I've found to ripen them off the vine is to put them in brown
JK> paper bags (lunch bag size, not big grocery size) and they ripen
JK> without rotting _most_ of the time :) :) Jim Crockett's book
JK> ("Crockett's Victory Garden" talks about that.

He lets them ripen naturally but we've tried that idea with other
fruits.

>> The Gurdgief movement was a pretty quiet one (at least in our area, I
>> closed group. They weren't quite hippies.. more "back to basics" and
>> "physical-work-to-releive stress", "purify yourself" people. But yes,
>> it would have been about the time I think.

JK> > I don't think that movement ever really took hold seriously in the
JK> > Catskills. They got more of the hippies,

JK> Umm.. I resemble that remark Lol..

I would have at the time if I could have.

JK> Seriously.. some of the hippies didn't 'come' to Sullivan County, Ron
JK> says (and he knows (laugh)) that some of them were born there. Ron
JK> went to Woodstock on Max Yasgur's farm.. My dad wouldn't let me go -
JK> with my oldest sister and my boyfriend.. so they just went without
JK> me... I was a little upset, but I was working anyway and wouldn't have

I was working too--keeping house for my family. Mom was in summer
school; that was the year she spent 9 weeks in Geneseo. I couldn't take
off as my youngeer siblings couldn't run the house. Did you ever see
the movie & recognise anybody?

JK> taken off the time. I was a lab assistant at the local hospital,
JK> which was pretty neat for a kid to be doing. They were training me to
JK> take blood, run blood tests, etc. Probably because of my Dad and his
JK> friends and my interest in it all.

Vampire in training?

>> so many of the new treatments (g). But he was always cool about it,
>> because he understood that all of these new treatments were so new and
>> so really experimental. He didn't blame me one bit for resisting.

JK> > He's one that was worth keeping.

JK> Yes, he sure was. When the current neurolgist, Dr. Apatoff, saw me for
JK> the first time, and was asking me about my "history", I mentioned to
JK> him that I'd been a patient/at this same hospital under Dr. Mark
JK> Horwich for YEARS.. and he said, Oh .. yes! I know Dr. Mark Horwich ..
JK> I'd known that Dr. H was one of the leading teachers/surgeons at
JK> NYHospital before they merged with Columbia Presbeterion, but it was
JK> still good to hear.. that Dr. Horwich was that neat a Dr. in other
JK> people's eyes. I knew it (grin). When I was working in college, on

Nice to know. The pulminologist I had in HI was another one of those
that was really good in his field. He got me squared away with asthma
managment and saw me thru some rough times.

JK> of the jobs I'd had was a Video clerk (I got to see some neat films,
JK> like La Strada from Fellini.. that was neat. I was lost in some of
JK> those films.. then all of a sudden Dr. Horwich turns up in an
JK> educational film for other doctors,

Nice surprise.
