Hi Michael,

> Picnics past
>> heh that's good :) I wasn't crazy about the durian, but
>> didn't think it was terrible either. The smell though was

> White folks are encouraged to hold their noses while eating.

Kind of like the first time someone encounters fresh Italian grating cheese :)
I had an aunt (she's gone now :() who could tell if you had grated cheese in
the kitchen days after the fact (yeah, her house was _really_ clean and never
had any dogs (laugh)).

> I've never seen anyone actually do this, but I hang out with
> a classier brand of white folks than normal, I suppose.

I suppose you do (grin). But the fruit itself doesn't smell so bad that I
could tell, at least... then again generally when outdoors my allergies keep my
sense of smell pretty well dulled.

> The main problem for me isn't the taste or the aroma, it's

Aw c'mon (g).. you must be a strong guy if you can take that scent :) :)

> rather that most of the durian eating opportunities I've had
> have been close to air travel dates, and the jet propulsion
> engendered by the fruit would make the other passengers want
> to strap me to the wings like another engine ...

Perhaps it should be unstated rule of Cooking Echo Picnics that durian should
be eaten the very first day, perhaps late at night.. so that the eh.. result
can be expelled when people first return to their hotels etc., well before they
would be flying/traveling (g).

> Picnics future
>> 2012. Who's stepping up, btw, for 2009? We were talking someplace
>> in the southeast, but was anyone tapped to be the pack horse of
>> the year? Sean maybe?

That would be neat, btw.. We've worked together for years on the filegate but
never met in person :(

>> I haven't seen any one yet mention who will be hosting
>> 2009, but I could have missed it..

> Various southern folks were talking about it even before this
> year's picnic happened. Don't think it's been determined yet
> who will win the prize.

I wouldn't mind doing it here again or whereever we are - haha.. I can't
imagine us selling the house and moving to Ithaca in that time span but
stranger things have happened I guess. I certainly didn't think Lauren would
move 3 times in two years Lol... Yet she and her family did, and lived through
it as well (g). I also wouldn't mind if someone in the southern area did it..
Warm is good (bg). Sean or Allen should have it perhaps.. Louisville is a nice
place to visit :) (Hey Allen :) Or Carol but I know her schedule can be
crazy.. My uncle lives close to her .. My cousins as well.. his son was
recently in the 'news' for the work he did regarding George Washington's
childhood home and archeology. Knocked me out, because he knows that was always
one of my dreams (archeology) :) BTW, they didn't find a hatchet there. :)

> The present is a picnic by comparison

This years picnic was good I hope :) I have nothing to compare it to <smile>
But it was absolutely great to me. I loved it all.

>> And why did Ron have to have an office?
>> Heh.. not that many people were working at home then as
>> programmers, etc. You went to an office and had your very
>> own desk or whatever (g).

> Ah. I've never had an office.

We had our own software company for about 5 years.. Invisible Light Software
(from one of T.S. Eliots' poems) .. even had an office :) but before that it
seems like I always did - various jobs.. people kept thinking I was good at
things <g> I guess I am. I get depressed over the stupedest things.. like if I
can't make something work.. :)

> Worked in one briefly when I was
> in college and grad school but never was under the illusion
> that that was the environment for me. Of course, musty smelly
> cramped orchestra pits were always more to my liking.

See, that's just like backstage wings for me (well, back then <g>). I would
have loved to continue it... and I know Ron would have been right there with me
if I asked. Not all actors and actresses have to be "on" all the time btw.. I
can't stand those people.. I suppose that's what you reacted to when I
mentioned theater..

> Linguine with Chicken, Walnuts and Mascarpone Cheese

Marscapone melts.. it's like butter... changes the taste when it's warmed but
it's still nice :) In comparison - Maybe cream cheese? eek. yuck. Maybe sour
cream or heavy cream.. I use it a lot in general cooking.

Take care,
Janis
