================
ML> It's tough when the cooks are the cleaner uppers and also the eats.
ML> Lots of stuff is allowed to set. And 8 glasses a person, oh my,
ML> I'm glad I got out of there in time.
GJ> But that is still preferable to private dinners where the host and/or
GJ> guests go into "wash-up" mode immediately after dinner, thereby
GJ> completely disrupting the social aspects of dinner.

I have had some very satisfying social encounters around the
kitchen sink.

GJ> Chicken feet are very good for that, as they contain a lot of gelatin.

Chicken feet are hard to come by in civilized parts, i.e., those
that spell civilized with a zee.

ML> avoid having to fish out all those little bones, something that
ML> has begun to annoy me, ever since when I found a mouse bone in the
ML> chub of ground beef that Stop & Shop sold me several years ago.
GJ> That would be an appetite killer!

When I encountered it, I kept eating. The appetite was affected
only in retrospect. I may still have that tiny bone around someplace,
or it may have gone away when I was triaging stuff before my big move.

I hate getting any unexpected bone
GJ> bits in mince or sausage meat due to the possibility of tooth
 GJ> breakage.

My teeth are hard. My issue is more aesthetic and emotional.

ML> Probably. Maybe you lack the goatyness taster gene?
GJ> The meat from old billygoats can have a strong goaty flavour, so
GJ> perhaps the dairy products under discussion come from billygoats.
GJ> (Keeping face very straight, with difficulty.)

Nannygoats also have a goaty flavor, minus the boar taint.

GJ> Hopefully, US Air would give the misdirected passengers free flights
GJ> back to the Forgetteville they wanted.

Usually the error is corrected on boarding: the cabin crews
say things like, "are you going to Arkansas," if only to see
people embarrassed to admit that they aren't ... or worse,
that they are.

On my last NZ trip, when
GJ> leaving Auckland, the pilot announced, "Flight 221 from Auckland to
GJ> Melbourne", which caused a collective gasp from the passengers, all of
GJ> whom wanted to go to Adelaide.

US Air is often guilty of that: the Shuttle shuttles among Boston,
New York, and Washington, and the crews often get addled midday
and start welcoming passengers to the wrong flight.

ML> Luckily, the error was cheerfully remedied.
GJ> So it should have been, as it was US Air's fault.

Indeed.

ML> My Visa card just got cancelled.
GJ> That is disturbing, as I don't want to be caught up in that! What was
GJ> the group of Visa cards cancelled?

I have no idea.

ML> Interestingly, the Jews make the distinction between Kosher
ML> and trayf gelatin ... but if the stuff is made from Kosher meat,
ML> not only is it Kosher, it's considered pareve!
GJ> What about yoghurt? I have a vegetarian friend who likes yoghurt, but
GJ> as it often contains gelatin she rejected it until I told her to get
GJ> yoghurt labelled Halal, as that can only be shown as such if it can be
GJ> guaranteed completely free of any Haram-derived ingredients

Yogurt is milchig if anything, whether it contains gelatin or not.

GJ> My reading on that subject indicated that the really useful beasts of
GJ> burden, like donkeys and camels, were given immunity from being eaten.
GJ> The ruling on horses is more ambivalent.

Again, hindsight rationalization is different from current
rationalization is different from real reason is different
from contemporary perceived real reason.

ML> If you think that dietary rules are based on scientific evidence,
 ML> then think again.
GJ> My father, who was a meat inspector for some years, told me that the
GJ> Jews were the first people to have proper rules on meat quality, and
GJ> to inspect all meat prepared for human consumption. Pigs were outed as
GJ> they could contain parasites which could be passed to people.

But do you think that Moses, or whoever had that aha phenomenon,
could win over the populace by saying, there are these invisible
trichina cysts that will eventually make you sick, so don't eat
pigs any more?

GJ> Horses can be Halal. Kangaroos are not. :)
 GJ> They are wild animals.

Is there really that distinction, and how is it made? How many
generations of pent kangaroos would it take before they became halal?

GJ> Possibly. Perhaps apple cucumbers would be allowable. Recently some
GJ> of the Australian soldiers in Afghanistan were criticised for
GJ> confining several Al Qaeda prisoners in a dog pound. ("Cruel and
GJ> unusual.") It was said in defence that the compound was new, and
GJ> hadn't yet been used for dogs, and there wasn't any other place
 GJ> available.

Does your Constitution also forbid cruel and unusual punishment?
And does it apply with full force of law to foreign nationals (the
current US administration takes the position that ours doesn't)?

SPICED MANGOES
cat: text only, relish
yield: 1 text

Peel and thinly slice green mangoes. Put into jars and cover with
whole spiced vinegar.

Store in refrigerator. Excellent sambal for curry or grilled steak.
