Hi Micheal,

>> Kind of like the first time someone encounters fresh
>> Italian grating cheese

> I had a buddy, 100% southern Italian, Calabrese I think,
> whose criterion for grana was that the better it was, the
> more it would smell like dirty feet.

Lol and he was right :) :) My aunt was so funny.. I mean, she could tell you
the type of Italian cheese and there are a number of them.

>> Perhaps it should be unstated rule of Cooking Echo Picnics
>> that durian should be eaten the very first day, perhaps
>> late at night.. so that the eh.. result can be expelled
>> when people first return to their hotels etc., well before
>> they would be flying/traveling (g).

> It's traditionally been on the main day so that the maximum
> number of people would be afflicted by, er, introduced to it.

haha :) Afflicted indeed.. Still there are a number of things in the world
that can cause such an effect and it's never been bad enough to keep me from
trying them or eating them again after the first try (g).

>> I wouldn't mind doing it here again or whereever we are - haha.. I
>> can't imagine us selling the house and moving to Ithaca

> Ithaca is a nice enough place, just don't make me go to that
> godforsaken Moosewood place again.

Lol.. I've never been there and have no desire to go there. My daughter and
her family did go there, and were extremely disapointed with the food "that
day". I guess after talking to her friends she heard that it depends on the day
you go, but in general the food is never as good as the food one might prepare
from their cookbooks. That was enough for me to say, "nevermind". There are
however some incredibly good restaurants in Ithaca.. We go to them quite often
as a matter of fact.. or, since all of them deliver within the city proper, we
order out quite often and have them bring the food to us :)

>> This years picnic was good I hope :) I have nothing to
>> compare it to <smile> But it was absolutely great to me. I
>> loved it all.

> It was wonderful, comparable to any we've had. I can't think of
> one less than great - except for the one where Patrick was off
> his meds and went off on all and sundry, and even it was fine
> except when I was interposing myself between him and the more
> conflict-averse people around. Haven't seen or heard from him
> since.

Aw.. don't know who you mean, but that's sad. Perhaps he'll come back to echo
at some point. I know 'stuff' happens to keep people from posting now and
then..

>>> You went to an office and had your very
>>> own desk or whatever (g).
>> Ah. I've never had an office.
>> We had our own software company for about 5 years..

> Condolences.

LOL.. yes, it had it's days, that's for sure. Writing software for a company
who's never hired custom programmers can be a trip.. they are sure think they
know what they want until they see the finished product.. then they need tons
of changes because that's not really what they wanted haha.. we were good
though and worked up models with RDM software (rapid developement cheesy
softare) to let them see what it would be like before we spent the time writing
custom C programs.. that helped a lot. We still have some of those customers
contacting us now and again so that's neat.

>> people kept thinking I was good
>> at things <g> I guess I am. I get depressed over the
>> stupedest things.. like if I can't make something work.. :)

> Most of my best friends, past, present, and future are this
> way. It's not exactly perfectionism, which can be a disease,
> but the desire to get things just plain done.

Yes, and get them done in a way that you know you can do...

[...]
>> Ron would have been right there with me if I asked. Not
>> all actors and actresses have to be "on" all the time btw..
> ...
>> I can't stand those people.. I suppose that's what you
>> reacted to when I mentioned theater..

> Not as bad as lawyers, who are "off" all the time.

Hey, I have a cousin who's a lawyer - we make terrible jokes about him all the
time.. :)

> I plead the fifth regarding theater.

Don't blame you a bit (grin)

> Oysters Birtley

> 2 avocados

I love avocdos.. Ron hates them with a passion.. and he's as white as can be
Lol.. can't understand it, really.. :)

==Nellie's Baba Ghanoush (Eggplant Appetizer on Pita Bread)==
This is a great appetizer or as antipasto served on small rounds of pita bread.
Nellie was the wife of my Dad's navy ship buddy, Hammersmith. They used to come
and visit quite often.

Preheat over to 400F
 1 large eggplant
 2 tablespoons lemon juice
 2 tablespoons sesame paste
 1 tablespoon olive oil
 1 teaspoon minced garlic
 1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons fresh flat leaf parsley, chopped

Cut 1 large eggplant in half lengthwise. Prick with a fork and place cut sides
down on a foil lined cookie sheet. Bake 25 minutes or until tender when pierced
with a knife.
Remove the eggplant peel with a small knife. Chop the eggplant and combine it
with lemon juice, sesame paste, olive oil, the minced garlic and the salt.
Puree the eggplant mixture until smooth. Add the parsley and serve with toasted
pita bread.

Take care,
Janis
