Not parties, all family, most often during 
harvest time, cotton picking, or canning 
time...best time was hog butchering time...
I used to get to feed the fire under the big 
(and I mean as big as a hot tub!) iron pot
 that they scalded the pig in. Mom is one of
13, and I have more cousins than you could
shake a stick at! (grin)

Most of what my mom cooked she learned from my
grandmother...and they mostly cooked from the garden.
My grandparents had a farm...a BIIIIG farm, and the 
kitchen garden was probably close to an acre in size.
(although it could be much less and my childhood memory
just remembers that it was great big!). There was 
cabbages, beets, turnips, mustard and collards, okra
(NEVER run through the okra...you'll get an itchy rash 
that will bother you for weeks!!) pumkins and squashes, 
cucumbers, peas and beans, corn, (lots of corn), melons
berries, grapes, and fruit and nut trees (about 10 acres 
of pecan trees between the farmhouse and the road).
I'm probably forgetting a lot of the veggies, but you
certainly get the idea. When it was canning time
all the daughters and daughters-in-law were in the 
kitchen working up a storm! we kids knew enough 
to lay low cause if you got caught you ended up 
shelling peas or beans...or packing cucumbers into
jars...not nearly as much fun as playing in the hay loft!
Don't remember any garlic though...don't think
my grandmother or mother used it much!
