=======================
-=> Quoting Ruth Hanschka to Glen Jamieson <=-

-> Adelaide went onto Daylight Savings while I was away, while Europe
-> hadn't changed. That was a bit confusing to return to.
 ->
RH> Given the time difference I wouldn't have thought it would make much
 RH> difference.

The confusion arose because my son had updated some of the clocks in
the house, but not others. Fortunately he referred to a correct one
when meeting me at the airport.

-> I'm a 1931 model; nearly as old as Burt!

RH> Oh, you're just a baby then. (whispers) Burt's OLD.

Yes, he is *months* older than me. *No one* is older than Burt!

-> Not then; it was a secondhand motorbike. Post-War cars were expensive
-> and difficult to get. I made my first one out of motorbike bits a
 -> couple of years later.

RH> That explains a few things. You've been cobbling bits together to
RH> make new stuff ever since.

I learnt more useful engineering from rebuilding and modifying old cars
and motorbikes than I did at university.

-> Humans and engines are different. Humans run best on poly-unsaturated
-> oils, but engines prefer the saturated types, such as coconut.

RH> Around here they get filtered deep fryer oil. I'll bet peanut oil
 RH> would work nicely too.

Peanut oil works best as a base stock for converting into biodiesel.
Likewise canola oil. In tropical countries (where it doesn't freeze)
coconut oil works well - and the exhaust smells quite pleasant.

-> Wheat is Australia's main food export, but quite a lot of sugar, also.
RH> I've seen things about that, but not recently. These days you seem to
 RH> export actors.

It used to be singers, but not so many now.

-> The Australian Broadcasting Commission (generally known as, "Auntie")
-> still provides a good range of commercial-free quality radio and TV
-> programs, and a series of classical music concerts.

RH> It just seems odd to have to license over the air signals. Do you
RH> still have to rent radios?

Radio licences were dropped in the 1950s or so, when small portables
were introduced and policing who owned radios (then called,
"wirelesses") became too difficult. As I made my own receivers, I
didn't bother about licences. When TV came in there was talk of
re-introducing government licences, but that came to nothing, and it
was left to privately owned companies like Fox TV to charge to run
cables around to feed personal TVs.

      Title: LAMINGTONS [AUSTRALIAN]
 Categories: Australian, Sml cakes
      Yield: 1 Batch

    125 g Flour- plain
    1/2 ts Baking powder
    125 g Butter
    185 g Sugar
      4 Eggs
           .
           ICING:-
    500 g Sugar- icing
     50 g Chocolate- plain
  2 1/2 tb Water
           Essence- vanilla
           Dessicated coconut

Preheat the oven to 180^C/350^F. Lightly grease with butter a 20cm x
20cm [8" x 8"]square cake pan and line with baking parchment. [My
Grandmother always used greased brown paper- KJCJD] Sift flour with
  the baking powder.

Beat the butter and sugar until creamy, light and fluffy. Add the
eggs one at a time, beating well after each one is added. Gently fold
into the creamed mixture the sifted flour. Pour the mixture into the
prepared pan. Bake until golden brown and the side are shrinking away
  from the pan. Cool.

When cold cut into square blocks. Slice each block into three slices
and fill with raspberry jam. [Apricot jam is also a favourite- KJCJD]

Sift the icing sugar and grate the chocolate. Put the sugar and
chocolate in a saucepan with the water. Heat, stirring all the time
but do not allow to boil. When it is quite liquid add the vanilla.
  Remove from the heat.

To coat the blocks with chocolate icing secure with a fork or skewer,
then dip them into the icing, coating them on all sides. Drain off
excess icing and immediately roll the blocks in a large dish of
desiccated coconut. Allow to dry before storing.
