I think my ancient, somewhat erratic Bluewave sorts by subject, and
possibly time.  It (and/or I) are not completely reliable, however.

So what is the solution to sorting and continuing threads when people's
discussions drift away from the original topic?

Sometimes the BBS I use is inaccessible, as its single phone line is
often being used by others, so I can't upload msgs.  Then, if I carry
one day's msgs over to the next day, I can easily separate one lot from
the other by referring to the date I put in the subject line.  This
(usually) enables me to avoid duplication or omission.  It also helps
me to check on progress when there is a hiccup in the long, involved,
communication links across the Pacific.

Some of my software is 20 years old, but it still does all I require,
so there is no point in changing.  (Sorry, Mr Gates!)

      Title: Soft-Shelled Cicadas
 Categories: Five, Marinades, Exotic
      Yield: 4 Servings
 
      1 c  Worcestershire sauce
     60    Newly emerged 17-yr cicadas
      4 lg Eggs; beaten
      3 c  Flour seasoned
           -=WITH=-
           Salt & pepper
      1 c  Corn oil or salted butter
 
  Marinate cicadas alive in a sealed container in Worcestershire sauce
  for several hours. (Note: You can skip this step and go directly to
  the egg step instead.)
  
  Dip them in the beaten egg, roll them in the seasoned flour and then
  gently sauté until they are golden brown.
  
  Yield: 4 main dish servings
