Hi Janis,

Before I get to the message: regarding -44 degrees. You wrote to Jim
about being glad you are in NY State. Believe it or not, the
Adirondacks get just about that cold at times durning the winter. One
of my sisters and brothers went to school at Paul Smith's College, then
the sister got a job in Saranac Lake. They had to have the car heaters
and such like too. Also, there are times that it gets down to -30 or so
in the Catskills. Ever hear snow crunch? It doesn't stay that cold all
the time but I'm still glad I'm in the south where it rarely goes below
freezing for very long. (G) Now, back to the usual.

>> too. > They also had a buffet cart of about a dozen salad ingredients

JK> We get there pretty often.. I take a number of vitamins and
JK> supplements we get there.. We've been going more often now that we've
JK> been picking up the frozen meats there. Eventually I hope to get the

The DTE we went to had no meats, all vegetarian. There was a farm up on
the North Shore that raised grass fed beef but I think they just sold to
restaurants. We had some nice "Bobby Burgers" at one place that used
their beef.

JK> grass-fed meats directly from the farmers in the area.. but I'm still
JK> collecting info about them all.

And, I presume, you'll post it here?

>> to get her to move in with us here - I cook so much, her being here

JK> > We've talked about having my mom move in if Dad dies first but not
JK> > talked with my siblings about it.

JK> We had Ron's parents living with us for about a year when we were in
JK> KY.. then they decided to go back to NY - They really missed the
JK> mountain temps and air of Sullivan county :) We hired someone to stop
JK> in on them every day to make sure all was ok with them.. that worked
JK> for a while. At some point in there, they decided to move into a
JK> nursing home up there.. big mistake :( The place was about the pits

You really need to check those places out good! It's something that
should be done well before you need it if possible.

JK> from what we could see. Ron's dad died there, then we took his mom
JK> back home with us to Louisville KY again.. She was going to come back
JK> to NY with us then (our closing for this house was to be in about 3
JK> weeks from then) when she got pneumonia and died in Louisville.. it
JK> was so rough, but at least we both were with her.

It's nice that you were able to take her in, just too bad that she died
before getting back to NY.

>> with the cold. She's in Florida now, in an assisted-living place

JK> > My older brother retired (from NYS DMV) in September, 2006 and
 JK> bought a > house in Titusville. He got a 4 bedroom place--and he's
JK> single! My in > laws live in Zephyrhills so we've been to Florida

JK> wow :) 4 bedrooms :) Well, I guess when you go to visit you have a

We've yet to visit my brother nor figure out why he went with such a big
place. I understand he has an orange tree on the property tho, and he
can watch the shuttle launches easily.

JK> nice place to stay :) My 2nd oldest sister lives near where mom is
JK> staying - Lantana FLA.. and another sister (the one with sewing
JK> machine incident haha) lives in Tampa.. we don't get down there that
JK> often, but we've gone a few times..I really don't do well in that heat

I know what you mean, heat and humidity are about as bad for me as cold
weather. BTW, I'll get my Pfaff back on Saturday.

>> choice, but when Ron and I saw what his parents went through in one,
>> we both agreed it was not the way to go...

JK> > Some needs more aging than others. From time to time, I'll get a
JK> piece > and sew it up right away but those are usually for projects
 JK> like the
JK> > baby quilts I did in HI or baby shower gifts.

JK> Sure, makes sense :) When I have some kind of function or whatever to
JK> attend, I usually make what I'm going to wear.. and can zip through
 JK> stuff then <grin>

It depends on how much lead time I have if I make or buy. Made an
outfit for a military ball in Berlin (royal blue velour long skirt &
jacket), finished hemming it about an hour before we had to be there.

>> I use a pattern from kwiksew.. I love their patterns <g>. This is the

JK> there > is usually 1/4". What's funny is that a while ago, I was
JK> making a shirt > for myself and started to use a 1/4 sa instead of
 JK> 5/8--too much
 JK> > quilting.

JK> Well, all of the children's patterns I've used from kwiksew do use
JK> 1/4" seams, but I'll have to check my jeans pattern.. I'm pretty sure
JK> that one used standard 5/8".

More room for alterations. (G)

JK> > longer; I'm glad I've other machines to use.

JK> Oh, that's too bad.. :( Well I hope it's returned to you soon.

See above.

JK> > Besides, you can leave the computer and stir the sauce if needs be.

 JK> Lol :) That's so true!

JK> > A lot of times when I'm working on a major sewing project, I'll have
JK> "no > brainer" meals--ones that don't take a lot of time or attention

JK> Yes, same here.. or something I can through in the oven and leave
JK> unattended while it cooks.. like the sausage and potatoes recipe.. :)

Anything that doesn't require fuss or is easy enough for a kid (teen) or
husband to cook fits my requirements. Even better, if there's someone
to clean up afterward too. (G)

>> Sure, I can understand that :) Making kids clothes is really such
>> fun.

JK> > And they go so fast!
