Ärende: EXPLODABILITY 81218
===========================
-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

DD> on an AD-1D Skyraider. There was a leak of LOX which was dripping onto
DD> the tarmac before evaporating and the sailor was there to fix the

DD> His heel landed in part of the pool of liquid oxygen on the tarmac and
DD> the compression factor resulted in an explosion which pretty much
DD> ruined his foot for all time.

GJ> Wow! That would be serious. I presume you were on a carrier or
GJ> something that had a non-inflammable tarmac material? If it had been
GJ> asphalt, I would have expected you would have lost the plane as well.
GJ> What did the aircraft use the lox for? The pilot or the engine? I
GJ> would not like to be with a lox tank in a plane that was likely to have
 GJ> bullets fired at it.

DD> Nope, no carrier. In my entire Navy enlistment I was never assigned to
DD> a ship. This was at Naval Air Station, Memphis (Millington) Tennessee.

Sounds like the Gilbert and Sullivan song about the "...ruler of the
Queen's Naveee." who never went to sea.

DD> And the termac was bog-standard asphalt/rock paving. The quantity of O2
DD> still in liquid form was (had to be) very small.

Ah. In that case some of the asphalt probably ignited as well as the
man's boot. Just as well it was only a small spill of LOX.

DD> I was in my electronics shop fixing a navagitional radar when the
DD> incident happened and it rattle the windows of the building right
DD> smart. I thought one of the armourers had managed to detonate a small
DD> bomb whislt arming a plane for

Loud, unexpected explosions in places where bombs are handled
frequently are always disturbing. :)

DD> The O2 was to supply breathing oxygen to the pilot and the radar/commo
 DD> operator
DD> (located in the fuselage) of the aircraft. The bottle wasn't all that
DD> big and LOX was used (I was told) because the bottle and its attendant
DD> equipment was smaller and weighed less than the equivalent cylinder(s)
DD> of compressed O2 and its distribution system.

One extra activity to get the plane flight-servicable would be to fill
the LOX tank, but I suppose carrier aircraft didn't normally need to be
ready at a moment's notice.

DD> There was quite a bit of armour plating on those old AD-1D Skyraiders
DD> as they were used for multiple missions including "close air support"
DD> ... meaning air to mud gunfire, rockets and bombs, strafing enemy
DD> positions, etc. So, they would take a lot of small arms fire from
DD> mudfeet of the enemy pissed at being shot at.

For such low altitude operations they wouldn't need the LOX.
