    Subj: BOMBARDIER 90313

JW> I just saw the ultimate snow machine: the Swedish Hagglund BV206.

GJ> Impressive! Is that the sort of machine used in Antarctica?

They use those there and also specially equipped 4X4 trucks with fat
snow tires but mostly small personal snow mobiles. Ski-doos are the
most popular make as they are sturdier and more durable than the
others, like I mentioned in my first post in the thread, with lower
speeds but more hauling power.

    Subj: BUSES 90313

GJ> What I found particularly interesting was that the perpetrator
GJ> was not shot dead by police, but captured unharmed. If anything
GJ> like that had happened in our Eastern states (Victoria,
GJ> Queensland and NSW) the man would have been deaded.

By the time the cops got there he wasn't threatening anyone else and
he was easily taken into custody without resistance, so they really
couldn't shoot him, especially with a busload of witnesses. But in
some cases deading would be best for all concerned.

To: Hap Newsom Subj: COMPUTERIZED CHECK 90313

-> Another way of getting money here is from the supermarket, as the
-> girl asks, "Money out?" when the customer uses a credit or debit
-> card to pay

We can get money out on a debit card but not a credit card. The
merchant pays 15 cents per transaction on debits, whether they are
large or small and the money is coming from your bank account. But
they get charged a percentage of the total on credit cards and
aren't prepared to do that on credit card cash outs. As well the
credit card companies have contracts with merchants that prohibit
the practice. The card companies give 21 to 30 days interest free
on purchases but the interest starts right away on cash advances,
which can only be obtained at banks.

GJ> The wonders of modern engineering... (Glen cranks up his de
GJ> Dion Bouton and drives away in a cloud of smoke!)

If you really have a working de Dion, you are one very wealthy guy!

  Subj: COMPUTERIZED CHECK 90313

 JW> a 25 cent tax

GJ> That is fairly logical. Many people use plastic shopping bags
GJ> for secondary purposes, such as house-hold rubbish bags, freezer
GJ> bags

I get at least three uses out of the old free bags: bring the
groceries home, store food or bread in them, and finally as a waste
paper basket liner or garbage bag. Now I'll have to buy "proper"
bags. They run about 2-10 cents each depending on size and quality
(thickness).

  Subj: GRAPES OF WRATH 90313

GJ> How many grapes to kill a human?

GJ> Perhaps I should change that question to "How many bottles of
GJ> Chilean wine to kill a human?"

About nine bottles in 24 hours I should think. We could experiment
with Kevin as a willing guinea pig.

GJ> Do you drink it? I have, occasionally.

I have had a few reds and like them. They are good value here as are
the Australians compared to Canadian, American or French. I want to
learn more about Argentine and Spanish wines. I've had a couple
of great ones at a good price.

We have a new territorial budget coming up and alcohol is getting
taxed even more heavily here starting April 1st! $6/L alcohol which
works out to 67.5 cents per 750 ml bottle of 15% wine.

To: Michael Loo Subj: SAUSAGE 343 90313

GJ> I heard that your Mr Madoff robbed quite a few thousands. Did
GJ> any of them get their money back?

It looks like they will recover about 20 cents on the dollar or more
than people who bought bank and car stock at the peak!

GJ> Not at all! No trolling. It is my experience that the citizens
GJ> of USA are nowhere near as bad as they depict themselves in TV
GJ> and other media sources of information presented to the outside
GJ> world. (Insert short anti-Rupert rant, blaming him for that.)
GJ> Most are quite nice people. Australians, OTOH, are nowhere near
GJ> as good as they depict themselves.

Nicely put.

To: Carol Shenkenberger Subj: TARTAR SAUCE 90313

GJ> What do you do with your old uniforms? Can you continue to wear
GJ> them, or parts thereof around the house?

Ex-uniforms can be worn by civilians as long as all the badges and
insignia are removed.

  Subj: HOUR AND CHANGE 90314

JW> An "hour and change" is an American idiom for an hour and a bit (a few
 JW> minutes more).

GJ> Well, stone the crows! I would never have guessed. That is an
GJ> expression that I do not recall having come across, ever.

Whereas Michael mistakenly thought you were being thick on purpose.

To: Dave Drum Subj: PLASTIC VS PAPER 90314

DD> Whatever happened to paper sacks??? They recycle much more
DD> easily than plastic.

GJ> I haven't seen large paper bags here since the plastic bags were
GJ> introduced to check-outs, decades ago.

We currently have both and are always offered a choice. I am not
sure what the status of paper bags will be when plastic ones start
getting taxed prohibitively come April.

Cheers

YK Jim
